And how does a monk dwell contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects? Here a monk dwells contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects internally, or externally, or both; contemplating their arising, or their passing away, or both. Or his mindfulness that 'there are mind-objects' is established just far enough for knowing and remembering. And he dwells independent, clinging to nothing in the world. That is how a monk dwells contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects.

This is the one-way path declared by the Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Awakened One, rightly proclaimed: for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the ending of pain and grief, for the attaining of the method, for the realising of Nibbana — namely, the four foundations of mindfulness.

Seeing the ending of birth, compassionate for welfare, he knows the one-way path. By this path they crossed over before, they will cross over, and they cross over now — the flood.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying among the Kurus, at a market town of the Kurus called Kammasadhamma. There he addressed the monks: 'Monks.' 'Venerable sir,' they replied, and the Blessed One said this.

This, monks, is the one-way path for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the ending of pain and grief, for the attaining of the method, for the realising of Nibbana — namely, the four foundations of mindfulness. Which four?
