กะตะมา จะ ภิกขะเว ชาติ. ยา เตสัง เตสัง สัตตานัง ตัมหิ ตัมหิ สัตตะนิกาเย ชาติ สัญชาติ โอกกันติ, นิพพัตติ อะภินิพพัตติ, ขันธานัง ปาตุภาโว, อายะตะนานัง ปะฏิลาโภ, อะยัง วุจจะติ ภิกขะเว ชาติ.

Katamā ca bhikkhave jāti. Yā tesaṃ tesaṃ sattānaṃ tamhi tamhi sattanikāye jāti sañjāti okkanti, nibbatti abhinibbatti, khandhānaṃ pātubhāvo, āyatanānaṃ paṭilābho, ayaṃ vuccati bhikkhave jāti.

And what, monks, is birth? The birth of beings into this or that order of beings, their being born, their descent into the womb, their production, their coming forth, the appearing of the aggregates, the obtaining of the sense bases — this, monks, is called birth.

กะตะมา จะ ภิกขะเว ชะรา. ยา เตสัง เตสัง สัตตานัง ตัมหิ ตัมหิ สัตตะนิกาเย ชะรา ชีระณะตา, ขัณฑิจจัง ปาลิจจัง วะลิตะจะตา, อายุโน สังหานิ อินท๎ริยานัง ปะริปาโก, อะยัง วุจจะติ ภิกขะเว ชะรา.

Katamā ca bhikkhave jarā. Yā tesaṃ tesaṃ sattānaṃ tamhi tamhi sattanikāye jarā jīraṇatā, khaṇḍiccaṃ pāliccaṃ valitacatā, āyuno saṅhāni indriyānaṃ paripāko, ayaṃ vuccati bhikkhave jarā.

And what, monks, is ageing? The ageing of beings in this or that order of beings, their growing old, brokenness of teeth, greyness of hair, wrinkling of skin, the dwindling of the life span, the wearing out of the faculties — this, monks, is called ageing.

กะตะมัญจะ ภิกขะเว มะระณัง. ยา เตสัง เตสัง สัตตานัง ตัมหา ตัมหา สัตตะนิกายา จุติ จะวะนะตา เภโท อันตะระธานัง, มัจจุ มะระณัง กาละกิริยา, ขันธานัง เภโท, กะเพวะรัสสะ นิกเขโป, ชีวิตินท๎ริยัสสะ อุปัจเฉโท, อิทัง วุจจะติ ภิกขะเว มะระณัง.

Katamañca bhikkhave maraṇaṃ. Yā tesaṃ tesaṃ sattānaṃ tamhā tamhā sattanikāyā cuti cavanatā bhedo antaradhānaṃ, maccu maraṇaṃ kālakiriyā, khandhānaṃ bhedo, kapevarassa nikkhepo, jīvitindriyassa upacchedo, idaṃ vuccati bhikkhave maraṇaṃ.

And what, monks, is death? The passing of beings out of this or that order of beings, their passing away, breaking up, disappearance, dying, death, completion of time, the breaking up of the aggregates, the laying down of the body, the cutting off of the life faculty — this, monks, is called death.

กะตะโม จะ ภิกขะเว โสโก. โย โข ภิกขะเว อัญญะตะรัญญะตะเรนะ พ๎ยะสะเนนะ สะมันนาคะตัสสะ อัญญะตะรัญญะตะเรนะ ทุกขะธัมเมนะ ผุฏฐัสสะ โสโก โสจะนา โสจิตัตตัง, อันโตโสโก อันโตปะริโสโก, อะยัง วุจจะติ ภิกขะเว โสโก.

Katamo ca bhikkhave soko. Yo kho bhikkhave aññataraññatarena byasanena samannāgatassa aññataraññatarena dukkhadhammena phuṭṭhassa soko socanā socitattaṃ, antosoko antoparisoko, ayaṃ vuccati bhikkhave soko.

And what, monks, is sorrow? The sorrow, sorrowing and sorrowfulness of one visited by some misfortune or other, touched by some painful state or other; the inward sorrow, the inward grieving — this, monks, is called sorrow.

กะตะโม จะ ภิกขะเว ปะริเทโว. โย โข ภิกขะเว อัญญะตะรัญญะตะเรนะ พ๎ยะสะเนนะ สะมันนาคะตัสสะ อัญญะตะรัญญะตะเรนะ ทุกขะธัมเมนะ ผุฏฐัสสะ อาเทโว ปะริเทโว, อาเทวะนา ปะริเทวะนา, อาเทวิตัตตัง ปะริเทวิตัตตัง, อะยัง วุจจะติ ภิกขะเว ปะริเทโว.

Katamo ca bhikkhave paridevo. Yo kho bhikkhave aññataraññatarena byasanena samannāgatassa aññataraññatarena dukkhadhammena phuṭṭhassa ādevo paridevo, ādevanā paridevanā, ādevitattaṃ paridevitattaṃ, ayaṃ vuccati bhikkhave paridevo.

And what, monks, is lamentation? The wailing and lamenting of one visited by some misfortune or other, touched by some painful state or other; the state of wailing, the state of lamenting — this, monks, is called lamentation.

กะตะมัญจะ ภิกขะเว ทุกขัง. ยัง โข ภิกขะเว กายิกัง ทุกขัง กายิกัง อะสาตัง, กายะสัมผัสสะชัง ทุกขัง อะสาตัง เวทะยิตัง, อิทัง วุจจะติ ภิกขะเว ทุกขัง, กะตะมัญจะ ภิกขะเว โทมะนัสสัง, ยัง โข ภิกขะเว เจตะสิกัง ทุกขัง, เจตะสิกัง อะสาตัง, เจโตสัมผัสสะชัง ทุกขัง อะสาตัง เวทะยิตัง, อิทัง วุจจะติ ภิกขะเว โทมะนัสสัง.

Katamañca bhikkhave dukkhaṃ. Yaṃ kho bhikkhave kāyikaṃ dukkhaṃ kāyikaṃ asātaṃ, kāyasamphassajaṃ dukkhaṃ asātaṃ vedayitaṃ, idaṃ vuccati bhikkhave dukkhaṃ, katamañca bhikkhave domanassaṃ, yaṃ kho bhikkhave cetasikaṃ dukkhaṃ, cetasikaṃ asātaṃ, cetosamphassajaṃ dukkhaṃ asātaṃ vedayitaṃ, idaṃ vuccati bhikkhave domanassaṃ.

And what, monks, is pain? Whatever bodily pain there is, whatever bodily unpleasantness, whatever painful or unpleasant feeling born of bodily contact — this, monks, is called pain. And what, monks, is grief? Whatever mental pain there is, whatever mental unpleasantness, whatever painful or unpleasant feeling born of mental contact — this, monks, is called grief.

กะตะโม จะ ภิกขะเว อุปายาโส. โย โข ภิกขะเว อัญญะตะรัญญะตะเรนะ พ๎ยะสะเนนะ สะมันนาคะตัสสะ อัญญะตะรัญญะตะเรนะ ทุกขะธัมเมนะ ผุฏฐัสสะ อายาโส อุปายาโส, อายาสิตัตตัง อุปายาสิตัตตัง, อะยัง วุจจะติ ภิกขะเว อุปายาโส.

Katamo ca bhikkhave upāyāso. Yo kho bhikkhave aññataraññatarena byasanena samannāgatassa aññataraññatarena dukkhadhammena phuṭṭhassa āyāso upāyāso, āyāsitattaṃ upāyāsitattaṃ, ayaṃ vuccati bhikkhave upāyāso.

And what, monks, is despair? The distress and despair of one visited by some misfortune or other, touched by some painful state or other; the state of distress, the state of despair — this, monks, is called despair.
