นักขัตตะยักขะภูตานัง ปาปัคคะหะนิวาระณา

Nakkhattayakkhabhūtānaṃ pāpaggahanivāraṇā

Warding off the evil planets of the stars, the yakkhas and the spirits,

ปะริตตัสสานุภาเวนะ หันต๎วา เตสัง อุปัททะเว.

Parittassānubhāvena hantvā tesaṃ upaddave.

by the power of the paritta, having destroyed their misfortunes.

นักขัตตะยักขะภูตานัง ปาปัคคะหะนิวาระณา

Nakkhattayakkhabhūtānaṃ pāpaggahanivāraṇā

ปะริตตัสสานุภาเวนะ หันต๎วา เตสัง อุปัททะเว.

Parittassānubhāvena hantvā tesaṃ upaddave.

by the power of the paritta, having destroyed their misfortunes.

สะเทวะกัสสะ โลกัสสะ นาถะภูโต นะราสะโภ,

Sadevakassa lokassa nāthabhūto narāsabho,

Being a refuge for the world with its devas, the bull among men,

สะนาถัตตัปปะสิทธัตถัง สาวะกานัง หิเตสะโก,

Sanāthattappasiddhatthaṃ sāvakānaṃ hitesako,

seeking the welfare of his disciples, that they might be established as ones with a refuge,

ทะสะ นาถะกะระเณ นามะ เย ธัมเม สะมุทีระยิ,

Dasa nāthakaraṇe nāma ye dhamme samudīrayi,

proclaimed the ten states called the makers of a refuge —

ตังสัมปะทาภิกามานัง สาธูนัง ธัมมะกามินัง,

Taṃsampadābhikāmānaṃ sādhūnaṃ dhammakāminaṃ,

for good people who love the Dhamma and long to attain them,

เตสัง สันทีปะกัง สุตตัง ยัง นาเถเนวะ ภาสิตัง,

Tesaṃ sandīpakaṃ suttaṃ yaṃ nāthenevabhāsitaṃ,

the sutta that sets those states out, spoken by the Refuge himself —

สะนาถัตตาตะสิทธัตถัง ตัง สุตตันตัง ภะณามะ เส.

Sanāthattātasiddhatthaṃ taṃ suttantaṃ bhaṇāma se.

let us recite that discourse, that we may be established as ones with a refuge.

อิธะ ภิกขะเว ภิกขุ สีละวา โหติ, ปาติโมกขะสังวะระสังวุโต วิหะระติ, อาจาระโคจะระสัมปันโน, อะณุมัตเตสุ วัชเชสุ ภะยะทัสสาวี สะมาทายะ สิกขะติ สิกขาปะเทสุ. ยัมปิ ภิกขะเว ภิกขุ สีละวา โหติ ปาติโมกขะสังวะระสังวุโต วิหะระติ อาจาระโคจะระสัมปันโน, อะณุมัตเตสุ วัชเชสุ ภะยะทัสสาวี สะมาทายะ สิกขะติ สิกขาปะเทสุ, อะยัมปิ ธัมโม นาถะกะระโณ.

Idha bhikkhave bhikkhu sīlavā hoti, pātimokkhasaṃvarasaṃvuto viharati, ācāragocarasampanno, aṇumattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvī samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu. Yampi bhikkhave bhikkhu sīlavā hoti pātimokkhasaṃvarasaṃvuto viharati ācāragocarasampanno, aṇumattesu vajjesu bhayadassāvī samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu, ayampi dhammo nāthakaraṇo.

Here, monks, a monk is virtuous; he dwells restrained by the restraint of the Pātimokkha, perfect in conduct and resort, seeing danger in the slightest fault, and trains in the training rules he has undertaken. That a monk is virtuous in this way — this too is a refuge-making quality.

ปุนะ จะปะรัง ภิกขะเว ภิกขุ พะหุสสุโต โหติ, สุตะธะโร สุตะสันนิจจะโย, เย เต ธัมมา อาทิกัล๎ยาณา มัชเฌกัล๎ยาณา ปะริโยสานะกัล๎ยาณา สาตัถัง สะพ๎ยัญชะนัง เกวะละปะริปุณณัง ปะริสุทธัง พ๎รัห๎มะจะริยัง อะภิวะทันติ, ตะถารูปัสสะ ธัมมา พะหุสสุตา โหนติ, ธะตา วะจะสา ปะริจิตา มะนะสานุเปกขิตา ทิฏฐิยา สุปะฏิวิทธา, ยัมปิ ภิกขะเว ภิกขุ พะหุสสุโต โหติ, สุตะธะโร สุตะสันนิจจะโย, เย เต ธัมมา อาทิกัล๎ยาณา มัชเฌกัล๎ยาณา ปะริโยสานะกัล๎ยาณา, สาตัถัง สะพ๎ยัญชะนัง เกวะละปะริปุณณัง ปะริสุทธัง พ๎รัห๎มะจะริยัง อะภิวะทันติ, ตะถารูปัสสะ ธัมมา พะหุสสุตา โหนติ, ธะตา วะจะสา ปะริจิตา มะนะสานุเปกขิตา ทิฏฐิยา สุปะฏิวิทธา, อะยัมปิ ธัมโม นาถะกะระโณ.

Puna caparaṃ bhikkhave bhikkhu bahussuto hoti, sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammā ādikalyāṇā majjhekalyāṇā pariyosānakalyāṇā sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ kevalaparipuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ brahmacariyaṃ abhivadanti, tathārūpassa dhammā bahussutā honti, dhatā vacasā paricitā manasānupekkhitā diṭṭhiyā suppaṭividdhā, yampi bhikkhave bhikkhu bahussuto hoti, sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammā ādikalyāṇā majjhekalyāṇā pariyosānakalyāṇā, sātthaṃ sabyañjanaṃ kevalaparipuṇṇaṃ parisuddhaṃ brahmacariyaṃ abhivadanti, tathārūpassa dhammā bahussutā honti, dhatā vacasā paricitā manasānupekkhitā diṭṭhiyā suppaṭividdhā, ayampi dhammo nāthakaraṇo.

And further, monks, a monk has learned much, retains what he has heard and stores it up; those teachings which are good in the beginning, good in the middle and good at the end, which proclaim with meaning and phrasing the wholly complete and purified holy life — such teachings he has learned much of, retained, recited aloud, pondered in mind and penetrated well by view. That a monk is learned in this way — this too is a refuge-making quality.
