Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was staying at Gaya, at Gaya's Head, together with a thousand monks. There he addressed them.

Monks, all is burning. And what is the all that is burning? The eye is burning, forms are burning, eye-consciousness is burning, eye-contact is burning; and whatever feeling arises dependent on eye-contact — pleasant, painful or neither — that too is burning. Burning with what? Burning with the fire of greed, the fire of hatred, the fire of delusion; burning with birth, ageing and death, with sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief and despair, I say.
