He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or he dwells contemplating the nature of passing away in the body, or he dwells contemplating the nature of both arising and passing away in the body. Or else mindfulness that 'there is a body' is established in him just so far as is needed for knowledge and for remembrance. And he dwells independent, clinging to nothing in the world. Thus too, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating the body in the body.

Puna caparaṃ bhikkhave bhikkhu gacchanto vā gacchāmīti pajānāti, ṭhito vā ṭhitomhīti pajānāti, nisinno vā nisinnomhīti pajānāti, sayāno vā sayānomhīti pajānāti, yathā yathā vā panassa kāyo paṇihito hoti, tathā tathā sampajānāti. And again, monks, a monk, when walking, knows 'I am walking'; when standing, knows 'I am standing'; when sitting, knows 'I am sitting'; when lying down, knows 'I am lying down'. In whatever way his body is disposed, so he understands it. Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, or he dwells contemplating the body in the body externally, or he dwells contemplating the body in the body both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or the nature of passing away in the body, or the nature of both arising and passing away in the body. Or else mindfulness that 'there is a body' is established in him just so far as is needed for knowledge and for remembrance. And he dwells independent, clinging to nothing in the world. Thus too, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating the body in the body.

Puna caparaṃ bhikkhave bhikkhu abhikkante paṭikkante sampajānakārī hoti, ālokite vilokite sampajānakārī hoti, samiñjite pasārite sampajānakārī hoti, saṅghāṭipattacīvaradhāraṇe sampajānakārī hoti, asite pīte khāyite sāyite sampajānakārī hoti, uccārapassāvakamme sampajānakārī hoti, gate ṭhite nisinne sutte jāgarite bhāsite tuṇhībhāve sampajānakārī hoti, iti ajjhattaṃ vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati, bahiddhā vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati, ajjhattabahiddhā vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati. Samudayadhammānupassī vā kāyasmiṃ viharati, vayadhammānupassī vā kāyasmiṃ viharati, samudayavayadhammānupassī vā kāyasmiṃ viharati. And again, monks, a monk is one who acts in clear comprehension when going forward and returning; who acts in clear comprehension when looking ahead and looking away; who acts in clear comprehension when bending and stretching his limbs; who acts in clear comprehension in carrying his outer cloak, his robes and his bowl; who acts in clear comprehension when eating, drinking, chewing and tasting; who acts in clear comprehension in passing excrement and urine; who acts in clear comprehension in walking, standing, sitting, falling asleep, waking, speaking and keeping silent.
