Puna caparaṃ bhikkhave bhikkhu imameva kāyaṃ uddhaṃ pādatalā adho kesamatthakā, tacapariyantaṃ pūrannānappakārassa asucino paccavekkhati. Atthi imasmiṃ kāye kesā lomā nakhā dantā taco, maṃsaṃ nahārū aṭṭhī aṭṭhimiñjaṃ vakkaṃ, hadayaṃ yakanaṃ kilomakaṃ pihakaṃ papphāsaṃ, antaṃ antaguṇaṃ udariyaṃ karīsaṃ, pittaṃ semhaṃ pubbo lohitaṃ sedo medo, assu vasā khepo siṅghāṇikā lasikā muttanti. Ime sālī, ime vīhī, ime muggā, ime māsā, ime tilā, ime taṇḍulāti. Evameva kho bhikkhave bhikkhu imameva kāyaṃ uddhaṃ pādatalā adho kesamatthakā, tacapariyantaṃ pūrannānappakārassa asucino paccavekkhati. Atthi imasmiṃ kāye kesā lomā nakhā dantā taco, maṃsaṃ nahārū aṭṭhī aṭṭhimiñjaṃ vakkaṃ, hadayaṃ yakanaṃ kilomakaṃ pihakaṃ papphāsaṃ, antaṃ antaguṇaṃ udariyaṃ karīsaṃ, pittaṃ semhaṃ pubbo lohitaṃ sedo medo, assu vasā khepo siṅghāṇikā lasikā muttanti. Iti ajjhattaṃ vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati, bahiddhā vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati, ajjhattabahiddhā vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati. Samudayadhammānupassī vā kāyasmiṃ viharati, vayadhammānupassī vā kāyasmiṃ viharati, samudayavayadhammānupassī vā kāyasmiṃ viharati. Atthi kāyoti vā panassa sati paccupaṭṭhitā hoti, yāvadeva ñāṇamattāya patissatimattāya. Anissito ca viharati, na ca kiñci loke upādiyati, evampi bhikkhave bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati.

And again, monks, a monk reviews this very body, upward from the soles of the feet and downward from the crown of the head, bounded by skin and full of impurity of many kinds: 'In this body there are head hairs, body hairs, nails, teeth, skin; flesh, sinews, bones, bone marrow, kidneys; heart, liver, membrane, spleen, lungs; bowels, mesentery, undigested food, excrement; bile, phlegm, pus, blood, sweat, fat; tears, grease, spittle, mucus, joint fluid, urine.' Just as though there were a sack open at both ends, filled with grain of many kinds — that is to say, hill rice, paddy, mung beans, kidney beans, sesame and husked rice — and a man with eyes to see were to open it and review it: 'These are hill rice, these paddy, these mung beans, these kidney beans, these sesame, these husked rice' — even so a monk reviews this very body, upward from the soles of the feet and downward from the crown of the head, bounded by skin and full of impurity of many kinds, and names the same parts over again. Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or the nature of passing away, or the nature of both arising and passing away. Or else mindfulness that 'there is a body' is established in him just so far as is needed for knowledge and for remembrance. And he dwells independent, clinging to nothing in the world. Thus too, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating the body in the body.

And again, monks, a monk reviews this very body, however it stands and however it is disposed, by way of the elements: 'In this body there is the earth element, the water element, the fire element, the air element.' Just as a skilled butcher or his apprentice, having slaughtered a cow, might sit at a crossroads with it divided into portions — even so a monk reviews this very body, however it stands and however it is disposed, by way of the elements: 'In this body there is the earth element, the water element, the fire element, the air element.' Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, or externally, or both internally and externally.
