Katamā ca sā bhikkhave majjhimā paṭipadā tathāgatena abhisambuddhā, cakkhukaraṇī ñāṇakaraṇī, upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṃvattati.

And what, monks, is that middle way discovered by the Tathāgata, which gives rise to vision and to knowledge, and leads to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna?

5

Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo. Seyyathīdaṃ, sammādiṭṭhi sammāsaṅkappo, sammāvācā sammākammanto sammāājīvo, sammāvāyāmo sammāsati sammāsamādhi.

It is this very noble eightfold path. That is to say: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.

6

Ayaṃ kho sā bhikkhave majjhimā paṭipadā tathāgatena abhisambuddhā, cakkhukaraṇī ñāṇakaraṇī, upasamāya abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṃvattati.

This, monks, is that middle way discovered by the Tathāgata, which gives rise to vision and to knowledge, and leads to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna.

Idaṃ kho pana bhikkhave dukkhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ. Jātipi dukkhā, jarāpi dukkhā, maraṇampi dukkhaṃ, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsāpi dukkhā, appiyehi sampayogo dukkho, piyehi vippayogo dukkho, yampicchaṃ na labhati tampi dukkhaṃ, saṅkhittena pañcuppādānakkhandhā dukkhā.

Now this, monks, is the noble truth of suffering. Birth is suffering, ageing is suffering, death is suffering; sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief and despair are suffering; union with what is disliked is suffering, separation from what is liked is suffering, not getting what one wants is suffering; in short, the five aggregates of clinging are suffering.

Idaṃ kho pana bhikkhave dukkhasamudayo ariyasaccaṃ. Yāyaṃ taṇhā ponobbhavikā nandirāgasahagatā tatratatrābhinandinī. Seyyathīdaṃ kāmataṇhā bhavataṇhā vibhavataṇhā.

Now this, monks, is the noble truth of the arising of suffering. It is this craving which leads to renewed becoming, accompanied by delight and lust, delighting now here now there — that is to say, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for becoming, craving for non-becoming.

9

Idaṃ kho pana bhikkhave dukkhanirodho ariyasaccaṃ. Yo tassāyeva taṇhāya asesavirāganirodho cāgo paṭinissaggo mutti anālayo.

Now this, monks, is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering. It is the remainderless fading away and cessation of that same craving, the giving up of it, the letting go of it, freedom from it, non-reliance upon it.

10

Idaṃ kho pana bhikkhave dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā ariyasaccaṃ.

Now this, monks, is the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering.

11

Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo. Seyyathīdaṃ sammādiṭṭhi sammāsaṅkappo, sammāvācā sammākammanto sammāājīvo, sammāvāyāmo sammāsati sammāsamādhi.

It is this very noble eightfold path. That is to say: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.

Idaṃ dukkhaṃ ariyasaccanti me bhikkhave pubbe ananussutesu dhammesu cakkhuṃ udapādi ñāṇaṃ udapādi paññā udapādi vijjā udapādi āloko udapādi.

This is the noble truth of suffering — so, monks, in regard to things unheard of before, there arose in me vision, there arose knowledge, there arose wisdom, there arose true knowledge, there arose light.

This noble truth of suffering is to be fully understood — so, monks, in regard to things unheard of before, there arose in me vision, there arose knowledge, there arose wisdom, there arose true knowledge, there arose light.

Taṃ kho panidaṃ dukkhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ pariññātanti me bhikkhave pubbe ananussutesu dhammesu cakkhuṃ udapādi ñāṇaṃ udapādi paññā udapādi vijjā udapādi āloko udapādi.

This noble truth of suffering has been fully understood — so, monks, in regard to things unheard of before, there arose in me vision, there arose knowledge, there arose wisdom, there arose true knowledge, there arose light.
