นิธิง นิเธติ ปุริโส คัมภีเร อุทะกันติเก

nidhiṃ nidheti puriso gambhīre udakantike

A man buries a store of treasure deep down, at the water's edge,

อัตเถ กิจเจ สะมุปปันเน อัตถายะ เม ภะวิสสะติ.

atthe kicce samuppanne atthāya me bhavissati.

thinking: when a need or a duty arises, it will serve my purpose.

ราชะโต วา ทุรุตตัสสะ โจระโต ปีฬิตัสสะ วา

rājato vā duruttassa corato pīḷitassa vā

If he is denounced by a king, or oppressed by a thief,

อิณัสสะ วา ปะโมกขายะ ทุพภิกเข อาปะทาสุ วา

iṇassa vā pamokkhāya dubbhikkhe āpadāsu vā

or for release from a debt, or in famine, or in calamity —

เอตะทัตถายะ โลกัส๎มิง นิธิ นามะ นิธิยยะติ.

etadatthāya lokasmiṃ nidhi nāma nidhiyyati.

it is for such purposes in the world that what is called a treasure store is buried.

ตาวัสสุนิหิโต สันโต คัมภีเร อุทะกันติเก

tāvassunihito santo gambhīre udakantike

Yet however well it lies buried, deep down at the water's edge,

นะ สัพโพ สัพพะทา เยวะ ตัสสะ ตัง อุปะกัปปะติ

na sabbo sabbadā yeva tassa taṃ upakappati

not all of it, and not at all times, serves him when he needs it.

นิธิ วา ฐานา จะวะติ สัญญา วาสสะ วิมุยหะติ.

nidhi vā ṭhānā cavati saññā vāssa vimuyhati.

The store shifts from its place, or his memory of it is confounded.

นาคา วา อะปะนาเมนติ ยักขา วาปิ หะรันติ นัง

nāgā vā apanāmenti yakkhā vāpi haranti naṃ

Nāgas carry it away, or yakkhas make off with it,

อัปปิยา วาปิ ทายาทา อุทธะรันติ อะปัสสะโต.

appiyā vāpi dāyādā uddharanti apassato.

or heirs he has no love for dig it up while he is not looking.

ยะทา ปุญญักขะโย โหติ สัพพะเมตัง วินัสสะติ.

yadā puññakkhayo hoti sabbametaṃ vinassati.

And when his merit is exhausted, the whole of it is lost.

ยัสสะ ทาเนนะ สีเลนะ สัญญะเมนะ ทะเมนะ จะ

yassa dānena sīlena saññamena damena ca

But the one who, by giving and by virtue, by restraint and by self-mastery,

นิธิ สุนิหิโต โหติ อิตถิยา ปุริสัสสะ วา

nidhi sunihito hoti itthiyā purisassa vā

has a treasure store well laid up — a woman or a man alike —

เจติยัมหิ จะ สังเฆ วา ปุคคะเล อะติถีสุ วา

cetiyamhi ca saṅghe vā puggale atithīsu vā

in a shrine, or in the Sangha, in a person, or in guests,

มาตะริ ปิตะริ วาปิ อะโถ เชฏฐัมหิ ภาตะริ

mātari pitari vāpi atho jeṭṭhamhi bhātari

in a mother, in a father, or in an elder brother —

เอโส นิธิ สุนิหิโต อะเชยโย อะนุคามิโก

eso nidhi sunihito ajeyyo anugāmiko

that is a store well laid up, unassailable, and it follows him.

ปะหายะ คะมะนีเยสุ เอตัง อาทายะ คัจฉะติ.

pahāya gamanīyesu etaṃ ādāya gacchati.

Leaving behind what must be left, he takes this with him when he goes.

อะสาธาระณะมัญเญสัง อะโจระหะระโณ นิธิ

asādhāraṇamaññesaṃ acoraharaṇo nidhi

A store no one else shares, that no thief can carry off —

กะยิราถะ ธีโร ปุญญานิ โย นิธิ อะนุคามิโก.

kayirātha dhīro puññāni yo nidhi anugāmiko.

let the wise make merit, the store that follows after.

เอสะ เทวะมะนุสสานัง สัพพะกามะทะโท นิธิ

esa devamanussānaṃ sabbakāmadado nidhi

This is the store that gives gods and men everything they wish for;

ยัง ยัง เทวาภิปัตเถนติ สัพพะเมเตนะ ลัพภะติ.

yaṃ yaṃ devābhipatthenti sabbametena labbhati.

whatever they long for, all of it is obtained by this.

สุวัณณะตา สุสะระตา สุสัณฐานัง สุรูปะตา

suvaṇṇatā susaratā susaṇṭhānaṃ surūpatā

A fair complexion, a fine voice, good proportion, beauty of form,

อาธิปัจจัง ปะริวาโร สัพพะเมเตนะ ลัพภะติ.

ādhipaccaṃ parivāro sabbametena labbhati.

sovereignty, a retinue — all of it is obtained by this.

ปะเทสะรัชชัง อิสสะริยัง จักกะวัตติสุขัง ปิยัง

padesarajjaṃ issariyaṃ cakkavattisukhaṃ piyaṃ

Kingship over a region, lordship, the dear happiness of a wheel-turning monarch,

เทวะรัชชัมปิ ทิพเพสุ สัพพะเมเตนะ ลัพภะติ.

devarajjampi dibbesu sabbametena labbhati.

and even sovereignty among the gods in the heavens — all of it is obtained by this.
