เอสานิสังโส ธัมเม สุจิณเณ

esānisaṃso dhamme suciṇṇe

This is the benefit of Dhamma well practised:

นะ ทุคคะติง คัจฉันติ ธัมมะจารี.

na duggatiṃ gacchanti dhammacārī.

one who lives by Dhamma does not go to a bad destination.

นะ ปุปผะคันโธ ปะฏิวาตะเมติ

na pupphagandho paṭivātameti

The scent of flowers does not travel against the wind,

นะ จันทะนัง ตะคะระมัลลิกา วา.

na candanaṃ tagaramallikā vā.

nor sandalwood, nor tagara, nor jasmine.

สะตัญจะ คันโธ ปะฏิวาตะเมติ

satañca gandho paṭivātameti

But the fragrance of the good does travel against the wind;

สัพพา ทิสา สัปปุริโส ปะวายะติ.

sabbā disā sappuriso pavāyati.

a true person perfumes every quarter.

จันทะนัง ตะคะรัง วาปิ อุปปะลัง อะถะ วัสสิกี

candanaṃ tagaraṃ vāpi uppalaṃ atha vassikī

Sandalwood or tagara, the blue lotus, or the jasmine —

เอเตสัง คันธะชาตานัง สีละคันโธ อะนุตตะโร.

etesaṃ gandhajātānaṃ sīlagandho anuttaro.

of all these kinds of fragrance, the fragrance of virtue is unsurpassed.

อัปปะมัตโต อะยัง คันโธ ย๎วายัง ตะคะระจันทะนิ

appamatto ayaṃ gandho yvāyaṃ tagaracandani

Slight is this fragrance, that of tagara and sandalwood;

โย จะ สีละวะตัง คันโธ วาติ เทเวสุ อุตตะโม.

yo ca sīlavataṃ gandho vāti devesu uttamo.

but the fragrance of the virtuous blows even among the gods, and is supreme.

เตสัง สัมปันนะสีลานัง อัปปะมาทะวิหารินัง

tesaṃ sampannasīlānaṃ appamādavihārinaṃ

Of those perfect in virtue, who dwell in heedfulness,

สัมมะทัญญา วิมุตตานัง มาโร มัคคัง นะ วินทะติ.

sammadaññā vimuttānaṃ māro maggaṃ na vindati.

liberated by right knowledge, Māra cannot find the path.

ยะถา สังการะธานัส๎มิง อุชฌิตัส๎มิง มะหาปะเถ

yathā saṅkāradhānasmiṃ ujjhitasmiṃ mahāpathe

Just as on a rubbish heap, cast aside beside the highway,

ปะทุมัง ตัตถะ ชาเยถะ สุจิคันธัง มะโนระมัง.

padumaṃ tattha jāyetha sucigandhaṃ manoramaṃ.

a lotus may spring up, sweet-scented and delighting the heart —

เอวัง สังการะภูเตสุ อันธะภูเต ปุถุชชะเน

evaṃ saṅkārabhūtesu andhabhūte puthujjane

so among those who have become as rubbish, among blind ordinary folk,

อะติโรจะติ ปัญญายะ สัมมาสัมพุทธะสาวะโกติ.

atirocati paññāya sammāsambuddhasāvakoti.

the disciple of the Fully Awakened One shines out in wisdom.

ยัส๎มิง ปะเทเส กัปเปติ วาสัง ปัณฑิตะชาติโย

yasmiṃ padese kappeti vāsaṃ paṇḍitajātiyo

In whatever place he makes his dwelling, one of wise nature,

สีละวันเตตถะ โภเชต๎วา สัญญะเต พ๎รัห๎มะจาริโน.

sīlavantettha bhojetvā saññate brahmacārino.

having fed there the virtuous, the restrained, the farers in the holy life,

๒ พ๎รัห๎มะจาริโน — the book's footnote gives another reading: พ๎รัห๎มจาระโย

ยา ตัตถะ เทวะตา อาสุง ตาสัง ทักขิณะมาทิเส

yā tattha devatā āsuṃ tāsaṃ dakkhiṇamādise

whatever devas there may be in that place, to them let him dedicate the offering.

ตา ปูชิตา ปูชะยันติ มานิตา มานะยันติ นัง

tā pūjitā pūjayanti mānitā mānayanti naṃ

They, being honoured, give honour in return; being held in regard, they hold him in regard.

ตะโต นัง อะนุกัมปันติ มาตา ปุตตังวะ โอระสัง

tato naṃ anukampanti mātā puttaṃva orasaṃ

Thereafter they show him compassion, as a mother towards her own-born son.

เทวะตานุกัมปิโต โปโส สะทา ภัท๎รานิ ปัสสะติ.

devatānukampito poso sadā bhadrāni passati.

The person to whom the devas are compassionate sees always what is auspicious.
