Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi:

Then another deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

24

“Chetvā khīlaṃ chetvā palighaṃ indakhīlaṃ ohacca-manejā,

“Having cut through the stake, having cut through the bar, having uprooted the pillar, unstirred,

25

Te caranti suddhā vimalā cakkhumatā sudantā susu nāgā”ti.

they walk pure and stainless, young nāgas well tamed by the One with vision.”

26

Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi:

Then another deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

27

“Ye keci buddhaṃ saraṇaṃ gatāse na te gamissanti apāyabhūmiṃ.

“Whoever have gone to the Buddha for refuge will not go to the plane of misery.

28

Pahāya mānusaṃ dehaṃ devakāyaṃ paripūressantī”ti.

Having left the human body behind, they will fill out the ranks of the devas.”

29

Atha kho bhagavā bhikkhu āmantesi,

Then the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus:

30

“yebhuyyena bhikkhave dasasu lokadhātūsu devatā sannipatitā tathāgataṃ dassanāya bhikkhusaṅghañca.

“Bhikkhus, deities from ten world-systems have for the most part gathered to see the Tathāgata and the community of bhikkhus.

31

Ye pi te bhikkhave ahesuṃ atīta-maddhānaṃ arahanto sammāsambuddhā, tesampi bhagavantānaṃ etaparamā yeva devatā sannipatitā ahesuṃ,

Bhikkhus, those who in times past were arahants, fully enlightened Buddhas — for those Blessed Ones too the deities gathered in just such numbers at most,

32

seyyathāpi mayhaṃ etarahi.

just as they do for me now.

33

Ye pi te bhikkhave bhavissanti anāgata-maddhānaṃ arahanto sammāsambuddhā,

And bhikkhus, those who in times to come will be arahants, fully enlightened Buddhas —

34

tesampi bhagavantānaṃ etaparamā yeva devatā sannipatitā bhavissanti,

for those Blessed Ones too the deities will gather in just such numbers at most,

35

seyyathāpi mayhaṃ etarahi.

just as they do for me now.

36

Ācikkhissāmi bhikkhave devakāyānaṃ nāmāni.

I shall announce, bhikkhus, the names of the hosts of devas.

37

Kittayissāmi bhikkhave devakāyānaṃ nāmāni.

I shall proclaim, bhikkhus, the names of the hosts of devas.

38

Desissāmi bhikkhave devakāyānaṃ nāmāni.

I shall teach, bhikkhus, the names of the hosts of devas.

39

Taṃ suṇātha. Sādhukaṃ manasikarotha. Bhāsissāmī”ti.

Listen to it. Attend closely. I shall speak.”

40

“Evam bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ.

“Yes, venerable sir,” those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One.
