Mahāsamayasutta The Discourse on the Great Assembly

The book prints this chant in Pali only. The English here is a working translation made for this edition, not the book's.

1

Evaṃ me sutaṃ:

Thus have I heard:

2

Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā

At one time the Blessed One

3

sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṃ mahāvane

was dwelling among the Sakyans, at Kapilavatthu in the Great Wood,

4

mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sabbeheva arahantehi.

together with a great community of bhikkhus, five hundred bhikkhus, all of them arahants.

5

Dasahi ca lokadhātūhi devatā yebhuyyena sannipatitā honti bhagavantaṃ dassanāya bhikkhusaṅghañca.

And from ten world-systems the deities had for the most part gathered to see the Blessed One and the community of bhikkhus.

6

Atha kho catunnaṃ suddhāvāsakāyikānaṃ devānaṃ etadahosi:

Then it occurred to four deities of the Pure Abodes:

7

“Ayaṃ kho bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṃ mahāvane

“This Blessed One is dwelling among the Sakyans, at Kapilavatthu in the Great Wood,

8

mahatā bhikkhusaṅghena saddhiṃ pañcamattehi bhikkhusatehi sabbeheva arahantehi

together with a great community of bhikkhus, five hundred bhikkhus, all of them arahants,

9

dasahi ca lokadhātūhi devatā yebhuyyena sannipatitā honti bhagavantaṃ dassanāya bhikkhusaṅghañca.

and from ten world-systems the deities have for the most part gathered to see the Blessed One and the community of bhikkhus.

10

Yannūna mayampi yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkameyyāma.

What if we too were to approach the Blessed One,

11

Upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato santike paccekagāthā bhāseyyāmā”ti.

and having approached, each speak a verse in his presence?”

12

Atha kho tā devatā

Then those deities —

13

seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso samiñjitaṃ vā bāhaṃ pasāreyya,

just as a strong man might extend his bent arm,

14

pasāritaṃ vā bāhaṃ samiñjeyya,

or bend his extended arm —

15

evameva suddhāvāsesu devesu antarahitā bhagavato purato pāturahaṃsu.

just so vanished from among the deities of the Pure Abodes and appeared before the Blessed One.

16

Atha kho tā devatā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhaṃsu.

Then those deities paid homage to the Blessed One and stood to one side.

17

Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho ekā devatā bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi:

Standing to one side, one deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

18

“Mahā samayo pavanasmiṃ. Devakāyā samāgatā:

“A great assembly in the woodland: the hosts of devas have come together;

19

‘Āgatamha imaṃ dhammasamayaṃ dakkhitāye v’aparājitasaṅghan’ti”.

‘we have come to this assembly of the Dhamma, to see the invincible Saṅgha’.”

20

Atha kho aparā devatā bhagavato santike imaṃ gāthaṃ abhāsi:

Then another deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

21

“Tatra bhikkhavo samādahaṃsu cittamattano ujuka-makaṃsu.

“There the bhikkhus are composed; they have made their own minds straight.

22

Sārathīva nettāni gahetvā indriyāni rakkhanti paṇḍitā”ti.

Like a charioteer holding the reins, the wise ones guard their faculties.”
