ชีวิตินท๎ริยุปัจเฉทะ สังขาตะมะระณัง สิยา

jīvitindriyupaccheda saṅkhātamaraṇaṃ siyā

Death is reckoned the cutting off of the life faculty;

สัพเพสังปีธะ ปาณีนัง ตัญหิ ธุวัง นะ ชีวิตัง.

sabbesaṃpīdha pāṇīnaṃ tañhi dhuvaṃ na jīvitaṃ.

for all living beings here that is certain, and life is not.

อะวิชชาทีหี สัมภูตา รูปัญจะ เวทะนา ตะถา

avijjādīhī sambhūtā rūpañca vedanā tathā

Arisen from ignorance and the rest are form, and feeling too,

อะโถ สัญญา จะ สังขารา วิญญาณัญจาติ ปัญจิเม.

atho saññā ca saṅkhārā viññāṇañcāti pañcime.

and perception, and formations, and consciousness — these five.

อุปปัชชันติ นิรุชฌันติ เอวัง หุต๎วา อะภาวะโต

uppajjanti nirujjhanti evaṃ hutvā abhāvato

They arise and they cease; having been thus, they are no more,

เอเต ธัมมา อะนิจจาจะ ตาวะกาลิกะตาทิโต.

ete dhammā aniccāca tāvakālikatādito.

so these states are impermanent, being temporary and the rest.

ปุนัปปุนัง ปีฬิตัตตา อุปปาเทนะ วะเยนะ จะ

punappunaṃ pīḷitattā uppādena vayena ca

Because they are oppressed again and again by arising and by passing away,

เต ทุกขาวะ อะนิจจา เย อะถะ สันตัตตะตาทิโต.

te dukkhāva aniccā ye atha santattatādito.

those that are impermanent are suffering, being continually burned and the rest.

วะเส อะวัตตะนาเยวะ อัตตะวิปักขะภาวะโต

vase avattanāyeva attavipakkhabhāvato

Because they do not bend to one's will, being opposed to a self,

สุญญัตตัสสามิกัตตา จะ เต อะนัตตาติ ญายะเร.

suññattassāmikattā ca te anattāti ñāyare.

and because they are empty and ownerless, they are known as not-self.

เอวัง สันเต จะ เต ธัมมา นิพพินทิตัพพะภาวะโต

evaṃ sante ca te dhammā nibbinditabbabhāvato

This being so, those states, being fit to be turned away from,

ทัฑฒะเคหะสะมาเยวะ อะลัง โมกขัง คะเวสิตุง.

daḍḍhagehasamāyeva alaṃ mokkhaṃ gavesituṃ.

are like a house on fire — enough to make one seek release.

ปัญจักขันธะมิมัง ทุกขัง ตัณหา สะมุทะโย ภะเว

pañcakkhandhamimaṃ dukkhaṃ taṇhā samudayo bhave

These five aggregates are suffering; craving is its origin;

ตัสสา นิโรโธ นิพพานัง มัคโค อัฏฐังคิการิโย.

tassā nirodho nibbānaṃ maggo aṭṭhaṅgikāriyo.

its cessation is Nibbāna; the path is the noble eightfold way.

เอตตะกานังปิ ปาฐานัง อัตถัง ญัต๎วา ยะถาระหัง

ettakānaṃpi pāṭhānaṃ atthaṃ ñatvā yathārahaṃ

Knowing the meaning of even these few passages as is fitting,

ปะฏิปัชเชถะ เมธาวี ปัตตุง สังขาระนิพพุตินติ.

paṭipajjetha medhāvī pattuṃ saṅkhāranibbutinti.

let the wise one practise, to reach the stilling of formations.

อะระหัง สัมมาสัมพุทโธ โลกานัง อะนุกัมปะโก

arahaṃ sammāsambuddho lokānaṃ anukampako

The Worthy One, perfectly enlightened by himself, compassionate towards the worlds,

เวเนยยานัง ปะโพเธตา สันติมัคคานุสาสะโก.

veneyyānaṃ pabodhetā santimaggānusāsako.

awakener of those ready to be trained, teacher of the path to peace.

ส๎วากขาโต อุตตะโม ธัมโม โลกานัง ตะมะทาละโก

svākkhāto uttamo dhammo lokānaṃ tamadālako

Well proclaimed, the highest Dhamma, render of the worlds' darkness,

นิยยานิโก จะ ทุกขัส๎มา ธัมมะจารีนุปาละโก.

niyyāniko ca dukkhasmā dhammacārīnupālako.

leading out from suffering, protector of those who walk in Dhamma.

สุปะฏิปันโน มะหาสังโฆ โลกานัง ปุญญะมากะโร

supaṭipanno mahāsaṅgho lokānaṃ puññamākaro

The great Sangha, practising well, a mine of merit for the worlds,

สีละทิฏฐีหิ สังสุทโธ สันติมัคคะนิโยชะโก.

sīladiṭṭhīhi saṃsuddho santimagganiyojako.

purified in virtue and in view, joining others to the path of peace.

อิจเจตัง ระตะนัง เสฏฐัง โลเก สะระณะมุตตะมัง

iccetaṃ ratanaṃ seṭṭhaṃ loke saraṇamuttamaṃ

So this jewel is the finest, the highest refuge in the world,
