ตัส๎มิญจะ โข สะมะเย ปัญจะวัคคิยานัง ภิกขูนัง ปะมุโข อายัส๎มา อัญญาโกณฑัญโญ ภะคะวะโต ธัมมัง สุต๎วา,

Tasmiñca kho samaye pañcavaggiyānaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ pamukho āyasmā aññākoṇḍañño bhagavato dhammaṃ sutvā,

And at that time the venerable Aññā-Koṇḍañña, foremost of the group of five bhikkhus, having heard the Dhamma of the Blessed One,

วิระชัง วีตะมะลัง ธัมมะจักขุง ปะฏิละภิต๎วา,

Virajaṃ vītamalaṃ dhammacakkhuṃ paṭilabhitvā,

and having gained the dust-free, stainless eye of the Dhamma —

ยังกิญจิ สะมุทะยะธัมมัง สัพพันตัง นิโรธะธัมมันติ.

Yaṅkiñci samudayadhammaṃ sabbantaṃ nirodhadhammanti.

'whatever is subject to arising, all that is subject to cessation' —

ภะคะวันตัง อุปะสัมปะทัง ยาจิต๎วา,

Bhagavantaṃ upasampadaṃ yācitvā,

asked the Blessed One for the higher ordination,

ภะคะวะโตเยวะ สันติกา เอหิภิกขุอุปะสัมปะทัง ปะฏิละภิต๎วา,

Bhagavatoyeva santikā ehibhikkhuupasampadaṃ paṭilabhitvā,

and having received the 'Come, bhikkhu' ordination from the Blessed One's own presence,

ภะคะวะโต ธัมมะวินะเย อะริยะสาวะกะสังโฆ โลเก ปะฐะมัง อุปปันโน อะโหสิ.

Bhagavato dhammavinaye ariyasāvakasaṅgho loke paṭhamaṃ uppanno ahosi.

the Saṅgha of noble disciples in the Blessed One's Dhamma and Discipline arose in the world for the first time.

ตัส๎มิญจาปิ โข สะมะเย สังฆะระตะนัง โลเก ปะฐะมัง อุปปันนัง อะโหสิ.

Tasmiñcāpi kho samaye saṅgharatanaṃ loke paṭhamaṃ uppannaṃ ahosi.

And at that time too the Jewel of the Saṅgha arose in the world for the first time.

พุทธะระตะนัง ธัมมะระตะนัง สังฆะระตะนันติ ติระตะนัง สัมปุณณัง อะโหสิ.

Buddharatanaṃ dhammaratanaṃ saṅgharatananti tiratanaṃ sampuṇṇaṃ ahosi.

and the Triple Jewel — the Jewel of the Buddha, the Jewel of the Dhamma and the Jewel of the Saṅgha — was complete.

มะยัง โข เอตะระหิ อิมัง อาสาฬ๎หะปุณณะมีกาลัง ตัสสะ ภะคะวะโต ธัมมะจักกัปปะวัตตะนะกาละสัมมะตัง อะริยะสาวะกะสังฆะอุปปัตติกาละสัมมะตัญจะ ระตะนัตตะยะสัมปุระณะกาละสัมมะตัญจะ ปัต๎วา,

Mayaṃ kho etarahi imaṃ āsāḷhapuṇṇamīkālaṃ tassa bhagavato dhammacakkappavattanakālasammataṃ ariyasāvakasaṅghauppattikālasammatañca ratanattayasampuraṇakālasammatañca patvā,

We now, at this present time, having reached this Āsāḷha full-moon day — which is held to be the time when that Blessed One set rolling the Wheel of the Dhamma, and the time when the Saṅgha of noble disciples arose, and the time when the Triple Jewel was made complete —

อิมัง ฐานัง สัมปัตตา,

Imaṃ ṭhānaṃ sampattā,

and having come to this place,

อิเม สักกาเร คะเหต๎วา,

Ime sakkāre gahetvā,

and having taken up these offerings,

อัตตะโน กายัง สักการุปะธานัง กะริต๎วา,

Attano kāyaṃ sakkārupadhānaṃ karitvā,

and having made our own body the bearer of that homage,

ตัสสะ ภะคะวะโต ยะถาภุจเจ คุเณ อะนุสสะรันตา,

Tassa bhagavato yathābhucce guṇe anussarantā,

recollecting the qualities of that Blessed One as they truly are,

อิมัง ถูปัง ติกขัตตุง ปะทักขิณัง กะริสสามะ,

Imaṃ thūpaṃ tikkhattuṃ padakkhiṇaṃ karissāma,

shall walk three times around this stūpa, keeping it on the right,

1 อิมัง ถูปัง — the book's footnote gives another reading: อิมัง ปะฏิมัง (imaṃ paṭimaṃ)

ยะถา คะหิเตหิ สักกาเรหิ ปูชัง กุรุมานา.

Yathā gahitehi sakkārehi pūjaṃ kurumānā.

making our offering with the offerings as they have been taken up.

สาธุ โน ภันเต ภะคะวา สุจิระปะรินิพพุโตปิ,

Sādhu no bhante bhagavā suciraparinibbutopi,

It would be well, venerable Blessed One, who though long since finally gone to nibbāna,

ญาตัพเพหิ คุเณหิ อะตีตารัมมะณะตายะ ปัญญายะมาโน,

Ñātabbehi guṇehi atītārammaṇatāya paññāyamāno,

are still known by your qualities, and are discerned as an object belonging to the past,

อิเม อัมเหหิ คะหิเต สักกาเร ปะฏิคคัณหาตุ,

Ime amhehi gahite sakkāre paṭiggaṇhātu,

that you accept these offerings taken up by us —

อัมหากัง ทีฆะรัตตัง หิตายะ สุขายะ.

Amhākaṃ dīgharattaṃ hitāya sukhāya.

for our welfare and happiness for a long time to come.
