59

Idha ariyasāvako paññavā hoti,

Here a noble disciple is wise,

60

Udayatthagāminiyā paññāya samannāgato,

endowed with the wisdom that reaches to rise and fall,

61

Ariyāya nibbedhikāya sammādukkhakkhayagāminiyā ti.

the noble penetrative wisdom that leads to the complete destruction of suffering.

62

Evaṃ kho heṭṭhimena pariyāyena paññā sammadakkhātā bhagavatā.

Thus, by the lower exposition, wisdom was well proclaimed by the Blessed One.

63

Kathañca uparimena pariyāyena paññā sammadakkhātā bhagavatā,

And how was wisdom well proclaimed by the Blessed One by the higher exposition?

64

Idha bhikkhu idaṃ dukkhan ti yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti,

Here a bhikkhu understands as it really is: 'This is suffering';

65

Ayaṃ dukkhasamudayo ti yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti,

he understands as it really is: 'This is the origin of suffering';

66

Ayaṃ dukkhanirodho ti yathābhūtaṃ pajānāti,

he understands as it really is: 'This is the cessation of suffering';

67

Ayaṃ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā ti yathābhūtaṃ pajānātī ti.

he understands as it really is: 'This is the way leading to the cessation of suffering'.

68

Evaṃ kho uparimena pariyāyena paññā sammadakkhātā bhagavatā.

Thus, by the higher exposition, wisdom was well proclaimed by the Blessed One.

69

Sīlaparibhāvito samādhi mahapphalo hoti mahānisaṃso,

Concentration steeped in virtue is of great fruit and great benefit;

70

Samādhiparibhāvitā paññā mahapphalā hoti mahānisaṃsā,

wisdom steeped in concentration is of great fruit and great benefit;

71

Paññāparibhāvitaṃ cittaṃ sammadeva āsavehi vimuccati.

the mind steeped in wisdom is rightly released from the taints.

72

Seyyathīdaṃ kāmāsavā bhavāsavā avijjāsavā.

That is to say: from the taint of sensuality, the taint of being, and the taint of ignorance.

73

Bhāsitā kho pana bhagavatā parinibbānasamaye ayaṃ pacchimavācā,

And these last words were spoken by the Blessed One at the time of his final Nibbāna:

74

Handadāni bhikkhave āmantayāmi vo,

'Come now, bhikkhus, I address you:

75

Vayadhammā saṅkhārā appamādena sampādethā ti.

all formations are subject to decay — bring about your welfare with diligence.'

76

Bhāsitañcidaṃ bhagavatā seyyathāpi bhikkhave yāni kānici jaṅgalānaṃ pāṇānaṃ padajātāni,

And this too was spoken by the Blessed One: 'Just as, bhikkhus, whatever footprints there are of creatures that walk,

77

Sabbāni tāni hatthipade samodhānaṃ gacchanti,

all of them are contained within the elephant's footprint,

78

Hatthipadaṃ tesaṃ aggamakkhāyati,

and the elephant's footprint is declared the chief of them,

79

Yadidaṃ mahantattena.

that is, by reason of its size;

80

Evameva kho bhikkhave ye keci kusalā dhammā sabbe te appamādamūlakā appamādasamosaraṇā,

just so, bhikkhus, whatever wholesome states there are, all of them are rooted in diligence and meet together in diligence,

81

Appamādo tesaṃ aggamakkhāyatī ti.

and diligence is declared the chief of them.'

82

Tasmātihamhehi sikkhitabbaṃ tibbāpekkhā bhavissāma,

Therefore we should train ourselves thus: 'We will be keenly intent

83

Adhisīlasikkhāsamādāne adhicittasikkhāsamādāne,

on undertaking the training in the higher virtue, on undertaking the training in the higher mind,

84

Adhipaññāsikkhāsamādāne,

on undertaking the training in the higher wisdom;

85

Appamādena sampādessāmā ti evañhi no sikkhitabbaṃ.

we will bring about our welfare with diligence' — thus indeed should we train ourselves.
