เอวัมเม สุตัง.
Evamme sutaṃ.
Thus have I heard.
เอกัง สะมะยัง ภะคะวา สาวัตถิยัง วิหะระติ เชตะวะเน อะนาถะปิณฑิกัสสะ อาราเม.
Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery.
อะถะโข อัญญะตะรา เทวะตา อะภิกกันตายะ รัตติยา อะภิกกันตะวัณณา เกวะละกัปปัง เชตะวะนัง โอภาเสต๎วา เยนะ ภะคะวา เตนุปะสังกะมิ อุปะสังกะมิต๎วา ภะคะวันตัง อะภิวาเทต๎วา เอกะมันตัง อัฏฐาสิ.
Athakho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṃ jetavanaṃ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ aṭṭhāsi.
Then a certain deity, in the far reaches of the night, of surpassing beauty, having lit up the whole of Jeta's Grove, approached the Blessed One; and having approached and paid homage to him, stood to one side.
เอกะมันตัง ฐิตา โข สา เทวะตา ภะคะวันตัง คาถายะ อัชฌะภาสิ.
Ekamantaṃ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṃ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi.
Standing to one side, that deity addressed the Blessed One in verse:
พะหู เทวา มะนุสสา จะ มังคะลานิ อะจินตะยุง
Bahū devā manussā ca maṅgalāni acintayuṃ
Many devas and human beings have pondered what blessings are,
อากังขะมานา โสตถานัง พ๎รูหิ มังคะละมุตตะมัง
Ākaṅkhamānā sotthānaṃ brūhi maṅgalamuttamaṃ
longing for well-being: tell us, then, the highest blessing.
อะเสวะนา จะ พาลานัง ปัณฑิตานัญจะ เสวะนา
Asevanā ca bālānaṃ paṇḍitānañca sevanā
Not to keep company with fools, but to keep company with the wise,
ปูชา จะ ปูชะนียานัง เอตัมมังคะละมุตตะมัง.
Pūjā ca pūjanīyānaṃ Etammaṅgalamuttamaṃ.
and to honour those worthy of honour: this is the highest blessing.
ปะฏิรูปะเทสะวาโส จะ ปุพเพ จะ กะตะปุญญะตา
Paṭirūpadesavāso ca pubbe ca katapuññatā
To live in a fitting place, and to have made merit in the past,
อัตตะสัมมาปะณิธิ จะ เอตัมมังคะละมุตตะมัง.
Attasammāpaṇidhi ca Etammaṅgalamuttamaṃ.
and to have set oneself rightly: this is the highest blessing.
พาหุสัจจัญจะ สิปปัญจะ วินะโย จะ สุสิกขิโต
Bāhusaccañca sippañca vinayo ca susikkhito
Much learning and skill, and a discipline well trained,
สุภาสิตา จะ ยา วาจา เอตัมมังคะละมุตตะมัง.
Subhāsitā ca yā vācā Etammaṅgalamuttamaṃ.
and speech that is well spoken: this is the highest blessing.
มาตาปิตุอุปัฏฐานัง ปุตตะทารัสสะ สังคะโห
Mātāpituupaṭṭhānaṃ puttadārassa saṅgaho
Supporting mother and father, and caring for wife and children,
อะนากุลา จะ กัมมันตา เอตัมมังคะละมุตตะมัง.
Anākulā ca kammantā Etammaṅgalamuttamaṃ.
and work that is free of confusion: this is the highest blessing.
ทานัญจะ ธัมมะจะริยา จะ ญาตะกานัญจะ สังคะโห
Dānañca dhammacariyā ca ñātakānañca saṅgaho
Giving, and living by the Dhamma, and caring for one's relatives,
อะนะวัชชานิ กัมมานิ เอตัมมังคะละมุตตะมัง.
Anavajjāni kammāni Etammaṅgalamuttamaṃ.
and actions that are blameless: this is the highest blessing.
อาระตี วิระตี ปาปา มัชชะปานา จะ สัญญะโม
Āratī viratī pāpā majjapānā ca saññamo
Ceasing and abstaining from evil, and restraint from strong drink,
อัปปะมาโท จะ ธัมเมสุ เอตัมมังคะละมุตตะมัง.
Appamādo ca dhammesu Etammaṅgalamuttamaṃ.
and diligence in wholesome states: this is the highest blessing.
คาระโว จะ นิวาโต จะ สันตุฏฐี จะ กะตัญญุตา
Gāravo ca nivāto ca santuṭṭhī ca kataññutā
Reverence and humility, contentment and gratitude,
กาเลนะ ธัมมัสสะวะนัง เอตัมมังคะละมุตตะมัง.
Kālena dhammassavanaṃ Etammaṅgalamuttamaṃ.
and hearing the Dhamma at the right time: this is the highest blessing.
ขันตี จะ โสวะจัสสะตา สะมะณานัญจะ ทัสสะนัง
Khantī ca sovacassatā samaṇānañca dassanaṃ
Patience, being easy to admonish, and the sight of contemplatives,
กาเลนะ ธัมมะสากัจฉา เอตัมมังคะละมุตตะมัง.
Kālena dhammasākacchā Etammaṅgalamuttamaṃ.
and discussion of the Dhamma at the right time: this is the highest blessing.
ตะโป จะ พ๎รัห๎มะจะริยัญจะ อะริยะสัจจานะทัสสะนัง
Tapo ca brahmacariyañca ariyasaccānadassanaṃ
Austerity and the holy life, and the seeing of the noble truths,
นิพพานะสัจฉิกิริยา จะ เอตัมมังคะละมุตตะมัง.
Nibbānasacchikiriyā ca Etammaṅgalamuttamaṃ.
and the realisation of Nibbāna: this is the highest blessing.
