พระเถระที่จะแสดงธรรมตั้งพัดให้อุโบสถศีล อุบาสกอุบาสิกาตั้งใจสมาทาน คือว่าตามพระโดยเคารพดังนี้ The elder who is to give the Dhamma talk sets up his fan to give the Uposatha precepts. The laymen and laywomen set their minds on undertaking them, repeating after the monk respectfully, as follows.

พระเถระว่า ติสะระณะคะมะนัง นิฏฐิตัง. อุบาสกอุบาสิการับพร้อมกันว่า อามะ ภันเต. พระเถระว่านำต่อไปดังนี้. The elder says tisaraṇagamanaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ — 'the going to the three refuges is completed'. The laymen and laywomen answer together āma bhante — 'yes, venerable sir'. The elder then leads on as follows.

I undertake the training rule to abstain from dancing, singing, music and unseemly shows, and from wearing garlands, scents and cosmetics, and from adornment and beautifying.
อุจจาสะยะนะมะหาสะยะนา เวระมะณี สิกขาปะทัง สะมาทิยามิ.
uccāsayanamahāsayanā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ samādiyāmi.
I undertake the training rule to abstain from a high bed and a large bed.
อิมัง อัฏฐังคะสะมันนาคะตัง, พุทธะปัญญัตตัง อุโปสะถัง, อิมัญจะ รัตติง อิมัญจะ ทิวะสัง, สัมมะเทวะ อะภิรักขิตุง สะมาทิยามิ.
