อิมานิ อัฏฐะ สิกขาปะทานิ อุโปสะถะสีละวะเสนะ สาธุกัง กัต๎วา อัปปะมาเทนะ รักขิตัพพานิ.
imāni aṭṭha sikkhāpadāni uposathasīlavasena sādhukaṃ katvā appamādena rakkhitabbāni.
These eight training rules, well undertaken as the virtue of the Uposatha, are to be guarded with heedfulness.
อุบาสกอุบาสิการับพร้อมกันว่า อามะ ภันเต. The laymen and laywomen answer together: āma bhante — 'yes, venerable sir'.

สีเลนะ สุคะติง ยันติ สีเลนะ โภคะสัมปะทา
sīlena sugatiṃ yanti sīlena bhogasampadā
By virtue beings go to a good destination; by virtue is prosperity attained;
สีเลนะ นิพพุติง ยันติ ตัส๎มา สีลัง วิโสธะเย.
sīlena nibbutiṃ yanti tasmā sīlaṃ visodhaye.
by virtue they go to peace. Therefore let virtue be purified.
เป็นอันเสร็จพิธีสมาทานอุโบสถศีลเท่านี้ ต่อจากนี้ พระเถระ เริ่มแสดงพระธรรมเทศนา พุทธบริษัททั้งบรรพชิตและคฤหัสถ์ ตั้งใจฟังโดยเคารพ เพื่อให้สำเร็จเป็นกุศลส่วนธรรมสวนมัยต่อไป พอแสดงพระธรรมเทศนาจบลง หัวหน้าอุบาสกกล่าวเชิญแสดงสาธุการว่า หันทะ มะยัง สาธุการัง กะโรมะ เส. อุบาสกอุบาสิกา นอกนี้รับพร้อมกันว่า สาธุ สาธุ สาธุ 3 หน แล้วหัวหน้าอุบาสกกล่าวเชิญสวด สะระณะคะมะนานุสสะระณะคาถา ต่อท้ายดังนี้ หันทะ มะยัง สะระณะคะมะนานุสสะระณะคาถาโย ภะณามะ เส. With this the ceremony of undertaking the Uposatha precepts is complete. After it the elder begins the Dhamma talk, and the Buddhist assembly, both those gone forth and the householders, listen attentively and respectfully, so that the merit of hearing the Dhamma may be accomplished. When the talk has ended, the leading layman gives the invitation to make the acclamation: handa mayaṃ sādhukāraṃ karoma se. The other laymen and laywomen answer together sādhu, sādhu, sādhu three times. Then the leading layman gives the invitation to chant the Saraṇagamanānussaraṇagāthā as a closing, thus: handa mayaṃ saraṇagamanānussaraṇagāthāyo bhaṇāma se.
อุบาสกอุบาสิกานอกนี้สวดพร้อมกัน หยุดตามจุดลูกน้ำดังนี้. The other laymen and laywomen chant together, pausing at the commas, as follows.
สะระณะคะมะนานุสสะระณะคาถา Saraṇagamanānussaraṇagāthā Verses Recollecting the Going for Refuge

อะหัง พุทธัญจะ ธัมมัญจะ สังฆัญจะ สะระณัง คะโต
ahaṃ buddhañca dhammañca saṅghañca saraṇaṃ gato
I have gone to the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Saṅgha as refuge,
อุปาสะกัตตัง เทเสสิง ภิกขุสังฆัสสะ สัมมุขา.
upāsakattaṃ desesiṃ bhikkhusaṅghassa sammukhā.
and declared myself a lay follower in the presence of the Saṅgha of bhikkhus.
เอตัง เม สะระณัง เขมัง เอตัง สะระณะมุตตะมัง
etaṃ me saraṇaṃ khemaṃ etaṃ saraṇamuttamaṃ
This is my safe refuge, this is the supreme refuge;
เอตัง สะระณะมาคัมมะ สัพพะทุกขา ปะมุจจะเย
etaṃ saraṇamāgamma sabbadukkhā pamuccaye
coming to this refuge, one is freed from all suffering.
ยะถาพะลัง จะเรยยาหัง สัมมาสัมพุทธะสาสะนัง
yathābalaṃ careyyāhaṃ sammāsambuddhasāsanaṃ
As far as my strength allows, may I practise the teaching of the Perfectly Self-Awakened One,
ทุกะนิสสะระณัสเสวะ ภาคี อัสสัง อะนาคะเต.
dukanissaraṇasseva bhāgī assaṃ anāgate.
and may I share in the escape from suffering in time to come.
1. คะโต สำหรับอุบาสก ถ้าอุบาสิกาใช้ คะตา gato is for a layman; a laywoman uses gatā.
2. อุปาสะกัตตัง สำหรับอุบาสก ถ้าอุบาสิกาใช้ อุปาสิกัตตัง upāsakattaṃ is for a layman; a laywoman uses upāsikattaṃ.
