Puna caparaṃ bhikkhave bhikkhu seyyathāpi passeyya sarīraṃ sīvathikāya chaḍḍitaṃ, ekāhamataṃ vā dvīhamataṃ vā tīhamataṃ vā, uddhumātakaṃ vinīlakaṃ vipubbakajātaṃ. So imameva kāyaṃ upasaṃharati. Ayampi kho kāyo evaṃdhammo evaṃbhāvī evaṃ anatītoti. Iti ajjhattaṃ vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati, bahiddhā vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati, ajjhattabahiddhā vā kāye kāyānupassī viharati. Samudayadhammānupassī vā kāyasmiṃ viharati, vayadhammānupassī vā kāyasmiṃ viharati, samudayavayadhammānupassī vā kāyasmiṃ viharati. Atthi kāyoti vā panassa sati paccupaṭṭhitā hoti, yāvadeva ñāṇamattāya patissatimattāya, anissito ca viharati, na ca kiñci loke upādiyati, evampi bhikkhave bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati.

And again, monks, a monk, as though he were to see a body cast away in a charnel ground — one day dead, or two days dead, or three days dead, bloated, discoloured and festering — compares this very body with it: 'This body too is of such a nature, will come to be like that, and is not exempt from it.' Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or the nature of passing away, or the nature of both arising and passing away. Or else mindfulness that 'there is a body' is established in him just so far as is needed for knowledge and for remembrance, and he dwells independent, clinging to nothing in the world. Thus too, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating the body in the body.

And again, monks, a monk, as though he were to see a body cast away in a charnel ground, being eaten by crows, or eaten by vultures, or eaten by hawks, or eaten by dogs, or eaten by jackals, or eaten by various kinds of small creatures — compares this very body with it: 'This body too is of such a nature, will come to be like that, and is not exempt from it.' Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or the nature of passing away. He dwells contemplating the nature of both arising and passing away. Or else mindfulness that 'there is a body' is established in him just so far as is needed for knowledge and for remembrance. And he dwells independent, clinging to nothing in the world. Thus too, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating the body in the body.
