Puna caparaṃ bhikkhave bhikkhu seyyathāpi passeyya sarīraṃ sīvathikāya chaḍḍitaṃ, aṭṭhisaṅkhalikaṃ samaṃsalohitaṃ nahāru sambandhaṃ. So imameva kāyaṃ upasaṃharati. Atthi kāyoti vā panassa sati paccupaṭṭhitā hoti, yāvadeva ñāṇamattāya patissatimattāya. Anissito ca viharati, na ca kiñci loke upādiyati, evampi bhikkhave bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati.

And again, monks, a monk, as though he were to see a body cast away in a charnel ground — a skeleton with flesh and blood upon it, held together by sinews — compares this very body with it: 'This body too is of such a nature, will come to be like that, and is not exempt from it.' Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the body internally. Or he dwells contemplating the body in the body externally, or both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or the nature of passing away, or the nature of both arising and passing away. Or else mindfulness that 'there is a body' is established in him just so far as is needed for knowledge and for remembrance. And he dwells independent, clinging to nothing in the world. Thus too, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating the body in the body.

And again, monks, a monk, as though he were to see a body cast away in a charnel ground — a skeleton without flesh, smeared with blood, held together by sinews — compares this very body with it: 'This body too is of such a nature, will come to be like that, and is not exempt from it.' Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or the nature of passing away, or the nature of both arising and passing away.
