And again, monks, a monk, as though he were to see a body cast away in a charnel ground — the bones heaped together, more than a year old — compares this very body with it: 'This body too is of such a nature, will come to be like that, and is not exempt from it.' Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or the nature of passing away, or the nature of both arising and passing away. Or else mindfulness that 'there is a body' is established in him just so far as is needed for knowledge and for remembrance. And he dwells independent, clinging to nothing in the world. Thus too, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating the body in the body.

And again, monks, a monk, as though he were to see a body cast away in a charnel ground — the bones rotted away and gone to powder — compares this very body with it: 'This body too is of such a nature, will come to be like that, and is not exempt from it.' Thus he dwells contemplating the body in the body internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in the body, or the nature of passing away, or the nature of both arising and passing away. And how, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating feelings in feelings? Here, monks, a monk, feeling a pleasant feeling, knows 'I feel a pleasant feeling'; feeling a painful feeling, knows 'I feel a painful feeling'; feeling a feeling neither painful nor pleasant, knows 'I feel a feeling neither painful nor pleasant'. Feeling a pleasant feeling of the flesh, he knows it as such; feeling a pleasant feeling not of the flesh, he knows it as such; and so with the painful, and with the neither-painful-nor-pleasant — each known as of the flesh or not of the flesh. Thus he dwells contemplating feelings in feelings internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in feelings, or the nature of passing away, or the nature of both arising and passing away. Or else mindfulness that 'there is feeling' is established in him just so far as is needed for knowledge and for remembrance. And he dwells independent, clinging to nothing in the world. Just so, monks, does a monk dwell contemplating feelings in feelings.
