And what, monks, is right concentration? Here, monks, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, a monk enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by thought and examination, with rapture and pleasure born of seclusion. With the stilling of thought and examination, he enters and dwells in the second jhāna, which has inner confidence and unification of mind, is without thought and without examination, and has rapture and pleasure born of concentration. With the fading away of rapture he dwells equanimous, mindful and clearly comprehending, and experiences pleasure with the body; he enters and dwells in the third jhāna, of which the noble ones declare: equanimous and mindful, he dwells pleasantly. With the abandoning of pleasure and the abandoning of pain, and with the earlier disappearance of gladness and grief, he enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna, which is neither painful nor pleasant and has purity of mindfulness through equanimity. This, monks, is called right concentration.

This, monks, is called the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering.

So he dwells contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects internally, or he dwells contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects externally, or he dwells contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating the nature of arising in mind-objects, or he dwells contemplating the nature of passing away in mind-objects, or he dwells contemplating the nature of both arising and passing away in mind-objects. Or else mindfulness that there are mind-objects is established in him just to the extent necessary for knowledge and remembrance. And he dwells independent, not clinging to anything in the world. That too, monks, is how a monk dwells contemplating mind-objects in mind-objects.
