สุพ์รัห์มา ปะระมัตโต จะ ปุตตา อิทธิมะโต สะหะ

Subrahmā paramatto ca puttā iddhimato saha

Subrahmā and Paramatta, and the sons of the Mighty One with them,

สันนังกุมาโร ติสโส จะ โสปาคะ สะมิติง วะนัง.

Sannaṅkumāro tisso ca sopāga samitiṃ vanaṃ.

Sanaṅkumāra and Tissa — he too came to the wood, to the assembly.

สะหัสสะพ์รัห์มะโลกานัง มะหาพ์รัห์มาภิติฏฐะติ

Sahassabrahmalokānaṃ mahābrahmābhitiṭṭhati

Over a thousand Brahmā-worlds the Great Brahmā presides,

อุปปันโน ชุติมันโต ภิส์มากาโย ยะสัสสิ โส.

Uppanno jutimanto bhismākāyo yasassi so.

arisen there, radiant, awesome of form, and glorious.

ทะเสตถะ อิสสะรา อาคู ปัจเจกะวะสะวัตติโน

Dasettha issarā āgū paccekavasavattino

Ten lords came here, each wielding his own power,

เตสัญจะ มัชฌะโต อาคา หาริโต ปะริวาริโต.

Tesañca majjhato āgā hārito parivārito.

and in the midst of them came Hārita with his retinue about him.

เต จะ สัพเพ อะภิกกันเต สินเท เทเว สะพ์รัห์มะเก

Te ca sabbe abhikkante sinde deve sabrahmake

And when all these had come, the devas with Inda and with Brahmā,

มาระเสนา อะภิกกามิ ปัสสะ กัณหัสสะ มันทิยัง.

Mārasenā abhikkāmi passa kaṇhassa mandiyaṃ.

Māra's army came on — see the folly of the Dark One!

เอถะ คัณหะถะ พันธะถะ ราเคนะ พันธะมัตถุ โว

Etha gaṇhatha bandhatha rāgena bandhamatthu vo

Come, seize them, bind them — let them be bound to you by lust!

สะมันตา ปะริวาเรถะ มา โว มุญจิตถะ โกจิ นัง.

Samantā parivāretha mā vo muñcittha koci naṃ.

Surround them on every side — let not one of them escape you!

อิติ ตัตถะ มะหาเสโน กัณหะเสนัง อะเปสะยิ

Iti tattha mahāseno kaṇhasenaṃ apesayi

So there the great commander sent forth his dark army,

ปาณินา ตะละมาหัจจะ สะรัง กัต์วานะ เภระวัง.

Pāṇinā talamāhacca saraṃ katvāna bheravaṃ.

striking the ground with his hand and making a terrible sound —

ยะถา ปาวุสสะโก เมโฆ ถะนะยันโต สะวิชชุโก

Yathā pāvussako megho thanayanto savijjuko

as a storm-cloud of the rains thunders with its lightning.

ตะทา โส ปัจจุทาวัตติ สังกุทโธ อะสะยังวะเส.

Tadā so paccudāvatti saṅkuddho asayaṃvase.

Then he drew back, enraged and not master of himself.

ตัญจะ สัพพัง อะภิญญายะ วะวักขิต์วานะ จักขุมา.

Tañca sabbaṃ abhiññāya vavakkhitvāna cakkhumā.

And knowing all that, the One with Vision considered it,

ตะโต อามันตะยิ สัตถา สาวะเก สาสะเน ระเต

Tato āmantayi satthā sāvake sāsane rate

and then the Teacher addressed the disciples who delight in his teaching:

มาระเสนา อะภิกกันตา เต วิชานาถะ ภิกขะโว.

Mārasenā abhikkantā te vijānātha bhikkhavo.

Māra's army has come on — know them, bhikkhus!

เต จะ อาตัปปะมะกะรุง สุต์วา พุทธัสสะ สาสะนัง

Te ca ātappamakaruṃ sutvā buddhassa sāsanaṃ

And they roused their ardour, hearing the Buddha's teaching.

วีตะราเคหิ ปักกามุง เนสัง โลมัมปิ อิญชะยุง.

Vītarāgehi pakkāmuṃ nesaṃ lomampi iñjayuṃ.

The army withdrew from those free of lust; not a hair of them stirred.

สัพเพ วิชิตะสังคามา ภะยาตีตา ยะสัสสิโน

Sabbe vijitasaṅgāmā bhayātītā yasassino

All of them have won the battle, gone beyond fear, and are glorious;

โมทันติ สะหะ ภูเตหิ สาวะกา เต ชะเนสุตาติ.

Modanti saha bhūtehi sāvakā te janesutāti.

they rejoice together with the spirits — those disciples of yours, renowned among people.
