Evamme sutaṃ. ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. tena kho pana samayena āyasmā girimānando ābādhiko hoti dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. athakho āyasmā ānando, yena bhagavā, tenupasaṅkami, upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṃ abhivādetvā ekamantaṃ nisīdi, ekamantaṃ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṃ etadavoca.

Thus have I heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now on that occasion the venerable Girimānanda was sick, afflicted, gravely ill. Then the venerable Ānanda went to the Blessed One, paid homage, sat down to one side, and said this to him:

'Venerable sir, the venerable Girimānanda is sick, afflicted, gravely ill. It would be good if the Blessed One would go to him, out of compassion.' 'If, Ānanda, you go to the bhikkhu Girimānanda and speak to him of ten perceptions, it is possible that on hearing them his affliction will subside on the spot. Which ten? The perception of impermanence, of not-self, of unattractiveness, of danger, of abandoning, of dispassion, of cessation, of disenchantment with the whole world, of impermanence in all formations, and mindfulness of breathing.

Katamā cānanda aniccasaññā. idhānanda bhikkhu araññagato vā rukkhamūlagato vā suññāgāragato vā iti paṭisañcikkhati. rūpaṃ aniccaṃ, vedanā aniccā, saññā aniccā, saṅkhārā aniccā, viññāṇaṃ aniccanti. iti imesu pañcasu upādānakkhandhesu aniccānupassī viharati, ayaṃ vuccatānanda aniccasaññā.

And what, Ānanda, is the perception of impermanence? Here a bhikkhu, gone to a forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, reflects thus: form is impermanent, feeling is impermanent, perception is impermanent, formations are impermanent, consciousness is impermanent. Thus he dwells contemplating impermanence in these five aggregates of clinging. This, Ānanda, is called the perception of impermanence.

Katamā cānanda anattasaññā. idhānanda bhikkhu araññagato vā rukkhamūlagato vā suññāgāragato vā iti paṭisañcikkhati. cakkhuṃ anattā, rūpā anattā, sotaṃ anattā, saddā anattā, ghānaṃ anattā, gandhā anattā, jivhā anattā, rasā anattā, kāyo anattā, phoṭṭhabbā anattā, mano anattā, dhammā anattāti. iti imesu chasu ajjhattikabāhiresu āyatanesu anattānupassī viharati. ayaṃ vuccatānanda anattasaññā.

And what is the perception of not-self? Here a bhikkhu, gone to a forest, to the root of a tree, or to an empty hut, reflects thus: the eye is not-self, forms are not-self; the ear is not-self, sounds are not-self; the nose is not-self, odours are not-self; the tongue is not-self, tastes are not-self; the body is not-self, tangibles are not-self; the mind is not-self, mind-objects are not-self. Thus he dwells contemplating not-self in these six internal and external sense bases. This is called the perception of not-self.
