อุกาสะ วันทามิ ภันเต, สัพพัง อะปะราธัง ขะมะถะ เม ภันเต, มะยา กะตัง ปุญญัง สามินา อะนุโมทิตัพพัง, สามินา กะตัง ปุญญัง มัยหัง ทาตัพพัง, สาธุ สาธุ อะนุโมทามิ.
Ukāsa vandāmi bhante, sabbaṃ aparādhaṃ khamatha me bhante, mayā kataṃ puññaṃ sāminā anumoditabbaṃ, sāminā kataṃ puññaṃ mayhaṃ dātabbaṃ, sādhu sādhu anumodāmi.
With your leave, I pay homage, venerable sir. Forgive me all my faults, venerable sir. May the merit I have made be rejoiced in by you; may the merit you have made be given to me. Sādhu, sādhu, I rejoice.
อุกาสะ การุญญัง กัต๎วา, ติสะระเณนะ สะหะ, สีลานิ เทถะ เม ภันเต.
Ukāsa kāruññaṃ katvā, tisaraṇena saha, sīlāni detha me bhante.
With your leave, having shown compassion, give me the precepts together with the three refuges, venerable sir.
(นั่งลงคุกเข่าขอสรณะและศีลดังต่อไปนี้)
(Kneel down and ask for the refuges and precepts as follows:)
อะหัง ภันเต, สะระณะสีลัง ยาจามิ,
Ahaṃ bhante, saraṇasīlaṃ yācāmi,
Venerable sir, I ask for the refuges and the precepts.
ทุติยัมปิ อะหัง ภันเต, สะระณะสีลัง ยาจามิ,
Dutiyampi ahaṃ bhante, saraṇasīlaṃ yācāmi,
For a second time, Venerable sir, I ask for the refuges and the precepts.
ตะติยัมปิ อะหัง ภันเต, สะระณะสีลัง ยาจามิ,
Tatiyampi ahaṃ bhante, saraṇasīlaṃ yācāmi,
For a third time, Venerable sir, I ask for the refuges and the precepts.
ลำดับนั้น พระอาจารย์กล่าวคำนมัสการนำให้ผู้มุ่งบรรพชา ว่าตามไปดังนี้.
Then the teacher pronounces the homage, leading the candidate to repeat it thus:
นะโม ตัสสะ ภะคะวะโต อะระหะโต สัมมาสัมพุทธัสสะ.
Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammāsambuddhassa.
Homage to the Blessed One, the Worthy One, the Fully Enlightened One.

แต่นั้นท่านจะสั่งด้วยคำว่า เอวัง วะเทหิ หรือ ยะมะหัง วะทามิ ตัง วะเทหิ พึงรับว่า อามะ ภันเต ครั้นแล้วท่านนำให้เปล่งวาจาว่าสรณะคมน์พึงว่าตามไปทีละพากย์ดังนี้
Then he will direct him with the words evaṃ vadehi, or yamahaṃ vadāmi taṃ vadehi, and he should answer āma bhante. Then the teacher leads him to pronounce the going for refuge, repeating phrase by phrase thus:
พุทธัง สะระณัง คัจฉามิ.
Buddhaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
I go to the Buddha for refuge.
ธัมมัง สะระณัง คัจฉามิ.
Dhammaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
I go to the Dhamma for refuge.
สังฆัง สะระณัง คัจฉามิ.
Saṅghaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
I go to the Saṅgha for refuge.
ทุติยัมปิ พุทธัง สะระณัง คัจฉามิ.
Dutiyampi buddhaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
For a second time I go to the Buddha for refuge.
ทุติยัมปิ ธัมมัง สะระณัง คัจฉามิ.
Dutiyampi dhammaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
For a second time I go to the Dhamma for refuge.
ทุติยัมปิ สังฆัง สะระณัง คัจฉามิ.
Dutiyampi saṅghaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
For a second time I go to the Saṅgha for refuge.
ตะติยัมปิ พุทธัง สะระณัง คัจฉามิ.
Tatiyampi buddhaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
For a third time I go to the Buddha for refuge.
ตะติยัมปิ ธัมมัง สะระณัง คัจฉามิ.
Tatiyampi dhammaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi.
For a third time I go to the Dhamma for refuge.
ตะติยัมปิ สังฆัง สะระณัง คัจฉามิ.

For a third time I go to the Saṅgha for refuge.
เมื่อจบแล้ว ท่านบอกว่า ติสะระณะคะมะนัง นิฏฐิตัง พึงรับว่า อามะ ภันเต ลำดับนั้นพระอาจารย์จะบอกให้รู้ว่า การบรรพชาเป็นสามเณรสำเร็จด้วยสรณคมน์เพียงเท่านี้ ต่อแต่นั้นพึงสมาทานสิกขาบท 10 ประการ ว่าตามท่านไปดังนี้
When it is finished he says tisaraṇagamanaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ, and he should answer āma bhante. Then the teacher tells him that the going forth as a novice is accomplished by the going for refuge alone. After that he should undertake the ten training rules, repeating after him thus:
