Puttā pi tassa bahavo indanāmā mahabbalā,

His sons too are many, all named Inda, of great strength,

Iddhimanto jutimanto vaṇṇavanto yasassino.

possessed of power, of radiance, of beauty and of renown,

Modamānā abhikkāmuṃ bhikkhūnaṃ samitiṃ vanaṃ.

came rejoicing to the wood, to the assembly of bhikkhus.

Uttarañca disaṃ rājā kuvero tap pasāsati.

And the king who rules the northern quarter is Kuvera.

Yakkhānaṃ ādhipati mahārājā yasassi so.

Lord of the yakkhas, a great king of renown.

Virūpakkha in the west, Kuvera in the northern quarter.

Cattāro te mahārājā samantā caturo disā

Those four Great Kings, filling the four quarters all around,

Daddallamānā aṭṭhaṃsu vane kāpilavatthave.

stood blazing in the Kapilavatthu wood.

Tesaṃ māyāvino dāsā āgū vañcanikā saṭhā

Their servants came, deceivers, tricksters and frauds:

Māyā kuṭeṇḍu veṭeṇḍu viṭuca viṭuṭo saha

Māyā, Kuṭeṇḍu, Veṭeṇḍu, Viṭu and Viṭuṭa together,

Candano kāmaseṭṭho ca kinnughaṇḍu nighaṇḍu ca,

Candana and Kāmaseṭṭha, Kinnughaṇḍu and Nighaṇḍu,

Panādo opamañño ca devasūto ca mātali,

Panāda and Opamañña, and Mātali the devas' charioteer,

Cittaseno ca gandhabbo naḷo rājā janosabho

Cittasena the gandhabba, king Naḷa, Janosabha,

105

Āgū pañcasikho ceva timbarū suriyavaccasā.

Pañcasikha came, and Timbarū with Suriyavaccasā.

Ete caññe ca rājāno gandhabbā saha rājubhi

These and other kings, gandhabbas together with their kings,

Modamānā abhikkāmuṃ bhikkhūnaṃ samitiṃ vanaṃ.

came rejoicing to the wood, to the assembly of bhikkhus.

Athāgū nābhasā nāgā vesālā saha tacchakā.

Then came the nāgas of Nābhasa, and those of Vesālī with the Tacchakas.

Kambalassatarā āgū pāyāgā saha ñātibhi.

The Kambalas and Assataras came, and those of Payāga with their kin.

Yāmūnā dhataraṭṭhā ca āgū nāgā yasassino.

The Yāmuna nāgas and the Dhataraṭṭhas came, nāgas of renown.

111

Erāvaṇṇo mahānāgo sopāga samitiṃ vanaṃ.

Erāvaṇṇa the great nāga, he too came to the wood, to the assembly.
