Ye nāgarāje sahasā haranti
Those swift ones who carry off the nāga kings,
Dibbā dijā pakkhi visuddhacakkhū,
divine birds, winged, of pure sight,
Vehāyasā te vana-majjhapattā.
through the air they came into the middle of the wood.
Citrā supaṇṇā iti tesa nāmaṃ.
Citrā and Supaṇṇā — such are their names.
Abhayan tadā nāgarājāna-māsi.
Then there was safety for the nāga kings:
Supaṇṇato khema-makāsi buddho.
the Buddha made a sanctuary for them from the supaṇṇas.
Saṇhāhi vācāhi upavhayantā,
Calling to one another with gentle words,
Nāgā supaṇṇā saraṇa-magaṃsu buddhaṃ.
nāgas and supaṇṇas alike went to the Buddha for refuge.
Jitā vajirahatthena samuddaṃ asurā sitā.
Conquered by the one with the thunderbolt in hand, the asuras dwell in the sea.
Bhātaro vāsavassete iddhimanto yasassino.
These brothers of Vāsava are possessed of power and renown.
Kālakañchā mahābhismā asurā dānaveghasā:
The Kālakañchas, greatly terrifying, the Dānaveghasa asuras:
Vepacitti sucitti ca pahārādo namucī saha
Vepacitti and Sucitti, Pahārāda together with Namucī,
Satañca baliputtānaṃ sabbe verocanāmakā.
and a hundred sons of Bali, all named Verocana.
Sannayhitvā baliṃ senaṃ rāhubhadda-mupāgamuṃ:
Having armed Bali's host, they went up to good Rāhu:
’Samayo ’dāni bhaddante bhikkhūnaṃ samitiṃ vanaṃ.’
'Now is the time, venerable sir, for the assembly of bhikkhus in the wood.'
Āpo ca devā paṭhavī ca tejo vāyo tadāgamuṃ.
The devas of water and of earth, of fire and of air, then came.
Varuṇā vāruṇā devā somo ca yasasā saha.
The Varuṇas, the devas of Varuṇa, and Soma together with Yasas.
Mettākaruṇākāyikā āgū devā yasassino.
The hosts of loving-kindness and compassion came, devas of renown.
Dasete dasadhā kāyā sabbe nānattavaṇṇino,
These ten, tenfold hosts, all of varied hues,
Iddhimanto jutimanto vaṇṇavanto yasassino.
possessed of power, of radiance, of beauty and of renown,
Modamānā abhikkāmuṃ bhikkhūnaṃ samitiṃ vanaṃ.
came rejoicing to the wood, to the assembly of bhikkhus.
Veṇḍū ca devā sahalī ca asamā ca duve yamā.
The Veṇḍu devas and the Sahalīs, the Asamas and the two Yamas.
Candassūpanisā devā canda-māgū purakkhitā.
The devas attending on the moon came, with the moon before them.
