Khemiyā tusitā yāmā kaṭṭhakā ca yasassino
The Khemiyas, Tusitas and Yāmas, and the Kaṭṭhakas of renown,
Lambitakā lāmaseṭṭhā jotināmā ca āsavā.
the Lambitakas and Lāmaseṭṭhas, the Jotināmas and Āsavas.
Nimmāṇaratino āgū. Athāgū paranimmitā.
The Nimmāṇaratis came. Then came the Paranimmitas.
Dasete dasadhā kāyā sabbe nānattavaṇṇino,
These ten, tenfold hosts, all of varied hues,
Iddhimanto jutimanto vaṇṇavanto yasassino.
possessed of power, of radiance, of beauty and of renown,
Modamānā abhikkāmuṃ bhikkhūnaṃ samitiṃ vanaṃ.
came rejoicing to the wood, to the assembly of bhikkhus.
Saṭṭhete devanikāyā sabbe nānattavaṇṇino,
These sixty orders of devas, all of varied hues,
Nāmanvayena āgañchuṃ ye caññe sadisā saha:
came each according to his name, and others like them with them:
’Pavutthajātimakkhīlaṃ oghatiṇṇa-manāsavaṃ,
'One whose birth is done with, who has no barrenness, who has crossed the flood, without taint,
Dakkhemoghataraṃ nāgaṃ candaṃ va asitātitaṃ.’
let us see the nāga who has crossed the flood, like the moon come clear of darkness.'
Subrahmā paramatto ca puttā iddhimato saha,
Subrahmā and Paramatta, sons together with the mighty one,
Sanaṅkumāro tisso ca sopāga samitiṃ vanaṃ.
Sanaṅkumāra and Tissa — he too came to the wood, to the assembly.
Sahassabrahmalokānaṃ mahābrahmābhitiṭṭhati.
Over a thousand Brahma worlds the Great Brahmā presides.
Upapanno jutimanto bhismākāyo yasassi so.
Reborn there, radiant, of awesome form, he is of renown.
Dasettha issarā āgū paccekavasavattino,
Ten lords came here, each wielding his own mastery,
Tesañca majjhato āgā hārito parivārito.
and in their midst came Hārita, surrounded by his retinue.
Te ca sabbe abhikkante sinde deve sabrahmake,
And when all these had come, the devas with Inda and with Brahmā,
Mārasenā abhikkāmi — passa kaṇhassa mandiyaṃ.
Māra's host came on — see the folly of the Dark One.
’Etha. Gaṇhatha. Bandhatha. Rāgena bandhamatthu vo.
'Come. Seize them. Bind them. Let them be bound by lust for you.
Samantā parivāretha. Mā vo muñcittha koci naṃ.’
Surround them on every side. Let not one of them escape you.'
Iti tattha mahāseno kaṇhasenaṃ apesayi,
So there the great commander sent forth his dark army,
Pāṇinā tala-māhacca saraṃ katvāna bheravaṃ,
striking the ground with his palm, making a terrifying sound,
