Salutation to the Dhamma

5

Dhammo padīpo viya tassa satthuno,

The Dhamma, like a lamp of that Teacher,

6

Yo maggapākāmata-bheda-bhinnako,

divided into path, fruit and the Deathless,

7

Lokuttaro yo ca tadattha-dīpano,

transcendent, and that which points to its meaning:

8

Vandāmi dhammaṃ ahamādarena taṃ.

I revere that Dhamma with devotion.

Salutation to the Sangha

9

Saṅgho sukhettābhyatikhetta-saññito,

The Sangha, called a field of merit surpassing all fields,

10

Yo diṭṭhasanto sugatānubodhako,

who have seen peace, awakening after the Well-Gone One,

11

Lolappahīno ariyo sumedhaso,

free of craving, noble and wise:

12

Vandāmi saṅghaṃ ahamādarena taṃ.

I revere that Sangha with devotion.

The Dedication

13

Iccevamekantabhipūjaneyyakaṃ,

Thus this triple object, wholly worthy of offering,

14

Vatthuttayaṃ vandayatābhisaṅkhataṃ,

which I have honoured with reverence —

15

Puññaṃ mayā yaṃ mama sabbupaddavā,

by whatever merit I have made, may all my obstacles

16

Mā hontu ve tassa pabhāva-siddhiyā.

be no more, through the power of its accomplishment.

1

Idha tathāgato loke uppanno arahaṃ sammāsambuddho,

Here a Tathāgata has arisen in the world, worthy and perfectly enlightened by himself,

2

Dhammo ca desito niyyāniko upasamiko parinibbāniko sambodhagāmī sugatappavedito,

and a Dhamma has been taught that leads out, brings peace, leads to final Nibbāna and to awakening, made known by the Well-Gone One.

3

Mayantaṃ dhammaṃ sutvā evaṃ jānāma,

Having heard that Dhamma, we know this:

4

Jātipi dukkhā jarāpi dukkhā maraṇampi dukkhaṃ,

birth is suffering, ageing is suffering, death is suffering,

5

Appiyehi sampayogo dukkho piyehi vippayogo dukkho yampicchaṃ na labhati tampi dukkhaṃ,

union with what is disliked is suffering, separation from what is liked is suffering, not getting what one wants is suffering,

7

Saṅkhittena pañcupādānakkhandhā dukkhā,

in short, the five aggregates of clinging are suffering,

8

Seyyathīdaṃ,

namely:

9

Rūpūpādānakkhandho,

the form aggregate of clinging,

10

Saṅkhārūpādānakkhandho,

the formations aggregate of clinging,

13

Viññāṇūpādānakkhandho,

the consciousness aggregate of clinging.

14

Yesaṃ pariññāya,

For the full understanding of these,

15
