1

Yathāpaccayaṃ pavattamānaṃ dhātumattamevetaṃ yadidaṃ cīvaraṃ,

Proceeding as its conditions proceed, this is merely elements — that is to say, this robe,

2

Tadupabhuñjako ca puggalo dhātumattako nissatto nijjīvo suñño,

and the person who makes use of it is merely elements, not a being, not a soul, empty,

3

Sabbāni pana imāni cīvarāni ajigucchanīyāni,

and all these robes are not in themselves repulsive,

4

Imaṃ pūtikāyaṃ patvā ativiya jigucchanīyāni jāyanti.

yet on reaching this foul body they become exceedingly repulsive.

5

Yathāpaccayaṃ pavattamānaṃ dhātumattamevetaṃ yadidaṃ piṇḍapāto,

Proceeding as its conditions proceed, this is merely elements — that is to say, this almsfood,

6

Tadupabhuñjako ca puggalo dhātumattako nissatto nijjīvo suñño,

and the person who makes use of it is merely elements, not a being, not a soul, empty,

7

Sabbo panāyaṃ piṇḍapāto ajigucchanīyo,

and all this almsfood is not in itself repulsive,

8

Imaṃ pūtikāyaṃ patvā ativiya jigucchanīyo jāyati.

The presiding monk gives the invitation, saying Handa mayaṃ uddissanādhiṭṭhānagāthāyo bhaṇāma se. The deputy begins the verses with Iminā, and the rest take them up from Puññakammena upajjhāyā guṇuttarā and so on, going on together, pausing at each comma, thus.
