ตีหิ สิกขาหิ สังขิตตัง ยาสุ พุทธานะ สาสะนัง.
Tīhi sikkhāhi saṅkhittaṃ yāsu buddhāna sāsanaṃ.
condensed into the three trainings, in which the teaching of the Buddhas is contained —
ตาสัมปะกาสะกัง ธัมมะปะริยายัง ภะณามะ เส.
Tāsampakāsakaṃ dhammapariyāyaṃ bhaṇāma se.
let us now recite the exposition of the Dhamma that sets them forth.
โอวาทะปาติโมกขาทิปาโฐ: The Exhortation Pāṭimokkha Passage
อุททิฏฐัง โข เตนะ ภะคะวะตา ชานะตา ปัสสะตา อะระหะตา สัมมาสัมพุทเธนะ,
Uddiṭṭhaṃ kho tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena,
Set forth by that Blessed One, who knows and sees, the worthy one, fully enlightened by himself,
โอวาทะปาติโมกขัง ตีหิ คาถาหิ.
Ovādapātimokkhaṃ tīhi gāthāhi.
was the Exhortation Pāṭimokkha, in three verses.
ขันตี ปะระมัง ตะโป ตีติกขา
Khantī paramaṃ tapo tītikkhā
Patient endurance is the supreme austerity;
นิพพานัง ปะระมัง วะทันติ พุทธา
Nibbānaṃ paramaṃ vadanti buddhā
the Buddhas say nibbāna is supreme.
นะ หิ ปัพพะชิโต ปะรูปะฆาตี
Na hi pabbajito parūpaghātī
One gone forth does not strike down another;
สะมะโณ โหติ ปะรัง วิเหฐะยันโต
Samaṇo hoti paraṃ viheṭhayanto
one who harms another is no ascetic.
สัพพะปาปัสสะ อะกะระณัง กุสะลัสสูปะสัมปะทา
Sabbapāpassa akaraṇaṃ kusalassūpasampadā
Not to do any evil, to take up what is skilful,
สะจิตตะปะริโยทะปะนัง เอตัง พุทธานะ สาสะนัง
Sacittapariyodapanaṃ etaṃ buddhāna sāsanaṃ
to purify one's own mind — this is the teaching of the Buddhas.
อะนูปะวาโท อะนูปะฆาโต ปาติโมกเข จะ สังวะโร
Anūpavādo anūpaghāto pātimokkhe ca saṃvaro
Not to speak against, not to injure, restraint under the Pāṭimokkha,
มัตตัญญุตา จะ ภัตตัส๎มิง ปันตัญจะ สะยะนาสะนัง
Mattaññutā ca bhattasmiṃ pantañca sayanāsanaṃ
moderation in eating, and a lodging apart,
อะธิจิตเต จะ อาโยโค เอตัง พุทธานะ สาสะนันติ.
Adhicitte ca āyogo etaṃ buddhāna sāsananti.
and devotion to the higher mind — this is the teaching of the Buddhas.
อะเนกะปะริยาเยนะ โข ปะนะ เตนะ ภะคะวะตา ชานะตา ปัสสะตา อะระหะตา สัมมาสัมพุทเธนะ,
Anekapariyāyena kho pana tena bhagavatā jānatā passatā arahatā sammāsambuddhena,
And in many ways by that Blessed One, who knows and sees, the worthy one, fully enlightened by himself,
สีลัง สัมมะทักขาตัง สะมาธิ สัมมะทักขาโต ปัญญา สัมมะทักขาตา.
Sīlaṃ sammadakkhātaṃ samādhi sammadakkhāto paññā sammadakkhātā.
virtue was well proclaimed, concentration was well proclaimed, wisdom was well proclaimed.
กะถัญจะ สีลัง สัมมะทักขาตัง ภะคะวะตา,
Kathañca sīlaṃ sammadakkhātaṃ bhagavatā,
And how was virtue well proclaimed by the Blessed One?
เหฏฐิเมนะปิ ปะริยาเยนะ สีลัง สัมมะทักขาตัง ภะคะวะตา,
Heṭṭhimenapi pariyāyena sīlaṃ sammadakkhātaṃ bhagavatā,
By the lower exposition too, virtue was well proclaimed by the Blessed One;
อุปะริเมนะปิ ปะริยาเยนะ สีลัง สัมมะทักขาตัง ภะคะวะตา,
Uparimenapi pariyāyena sīlaṃ sammadakkhātaṃ bhagavatā,
and by the higher exposition too, virtue was well proclaimed by the Blessed One,
กะถัญจะ เหฏฐิเมนะ ปะริยาเยนะ สีลัง สัมมะทักขาตัง ภะคะวะตา,
Kathañca heṭṭhimena pariyāyena sīlaṃ sammadakkhātaṃ bhagavatā,
And how was virtue well proclaimed by the Blessed One in the lower exposition?
อิธะ อะริยะสาวะโก ปาณาติปาตา ปะฏิวิระโต โหติ.
Idha ariyasāvako pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti.
Here a noble disciple abstains from killing living beings.
อะทินนาทานา ปะฏิวิระโต โหติ.
Adinnādānā paṭivirato hoti.
He abstains from taking what is not given.
กาเมสุมิจฉาจารา ปะฏิวิระโต โหติ.
Kāmesumicchācārā paṭivirato hoti.
He abstains from misconduct in sensual pleasures.
มุสาวาทา ปะฏิวิระโต โหติ.
Musāvādā paṭivirato hoti.
He abstains from false speech.
สุราเมระยะมัชชะปะมาทัฏฐานา ปะฏิวิระโต โหตีติ.
Surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭivirato hotīti.
He abstains from wines, spirits and intoxicants, which are the basis of heedlessness.
เอวัง โข เหฏฐิเมนะ ปะริยาเยนะ สีลัง สัมมะทักขาตัง ภะคะวะตา.
Evaṃ kho heṭṭhimena pariyāyena sīlaṃ sammadakkhātaṃ bhagavatā.
Thus was virtue well proclaimed by the Blessed One in the lower exposition.
