มาตา ปิตา จะ นิกขันตา ชาตะเวทะ ปะฏิกกะมะ
Mātā pitā ca nikkhantā jātaveda paṭikkama
My mother and father have gone out — O Fire, turn back!
สะหะ สัจเจ กะเต มัยหัง มะหาปัชชะลิโต สิขี
Saha sacce kate mayhaṃ mahāpajjalito sikhī
When my act of truth was made, the great blazing flame
วัชเชสิ โสฬะสะ กะรีสานิ อุทะกัง ปัต๎วา ยะถา สิขี
Vajjesi soḷasa karīsāni udakaṃ patvā yathā sikhī
spared sixteen karīsas, as a flame does on reaching water.
สัจเจนะ เม สะโม นัตถิ เอสา เม สัจจะปาระมีติ.
Saccena me samo natthi esā me saccapāramīti.
There is nothing equal to my truth: this is my perfection of truth.
วัฏฏะกะปะริตตัง นิฏฐิตัง.
Vaṭṭakaparittaṃ niṭṭhitaṃ.

ยัสสานุสสะระเณนาปิ อันตะลิกเขปิ ปาณิโน,
Yassānussaraṇenāpi antalikkhepi pāṇino,
By the mere recollection of which even creatures in mid-air
ปะติฏฐะมะธิคัจฉันติ ภูมิยัง วิยะ สัพพะทา,
Patiṭṭhamadhigacchanti bhūmiyaṃ viya sabbadā,
always find a footing, as though upon the ground;
สัพพูปัททะวะชาลัมหา ยักขะโจราทิสัมภะวา,
Sabbūpaddavajālamhā yakkhacorādisambhavā,
and from the net of all misfortunes arising from yakkhas, thieves and the like,
คะณะนา นะ จะ มุตตานัง ปะริตตันตัมภะณามะ เห.
Gaṇanā na ca muttānaṃ parittantambhaṇāma he.
those freed are beyond counting: that paritta let us now recite.

เอวัมเม สุตัง,
Evamme sutaṃ,
Thus have I heard.
เอกัง สะมะยัง ภะคะวา สาวัตถิยัง วิหะระติ เชตะวะเน อะนาถะปิณฑิกัสสะ อาราเม.
Ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.
At one time the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery.
ตัต๎ระ โข ภะคะวา ภิกขู อามันเตสิ ภิกขะโวติ.
Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi bhikkhavoti.
There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: 'Bhikkhus!'
ภะทันเตติ เต ภิกขู ภะคะวะโต ปัจจัสโสสุง.
Bhadanteti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ.
'Venerable sir,' those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One.
ภะคะวา เอตะทะโวจะ.
Bhagavā etadavoca.
The Blessed One said this:
ภูตะปุพพัง ภิกขะเว เทวาสุระสังคาโม สะมุปัพ๎ยุพโห อะโหสิ,
Bhūtapubbaṃ bhikkhave devāsurasaṅgāmo samupabyupho ahosi,
Once upon a time, bhikkhus, a battle between the devas and the asuras was joined.
อะถะ โข ภิกขะเว สักโก เทวานะมินโท เทเว ตาวะติงเส อามันเตสิ.
Atha kho bhikkhave sakko devānamindo deve tāvatiṃse āmantesi.
Then, bhikkhus, Sakka lord of the devas addressed the devas of the Thirty-Three:
สะเจ มาริสา เทวานัง สังคามะคะตานัง อุปปัชเชยยะ ภะยัง วา ฉัมภิตัตตัง วา โลมะหังโส วา,
Sace mārisā devānaṃ saṅgāmagatānaṃ uppajjeyya bhayaṃ vā chambhitattaṃ vā lomahaṃso vā,
'If, good sirs, fear or trembling or horripilation should arise in the devas gone to battle,
มะเมวะ ตัส๎มิง สะมะเย ธะชัคคัง อุลโลเกยยาถะ,
Mameva tasmiṃ samaye dhajaggaṃ ullokeyyātha,
then at that time look up at the top of my banner;
มะมัง หิ โว ธะชัคคัง อุลโลกะยะตัง ยัมภะวิสสะติ,
Mamaṃ hi vo dhajaggaṃ ullokayataṃ yambhavissati,
for when you look up at the top of my banner, whatever
ภะยัง วา ฉัมภิตัตตัง วา โลมะหังโส วา,
Bhayaṃ vā chambhitattaṃ vā lomahaṃso vā,
fear or trembling or horripilation there may be,
โส ปะหิยยิสสะติ.
So pahiyyissati.
it will be abandoned.
โน เจ เม ธะชัคคัง อุลโลเกยยาถะ.
No ce me dhajaggaṃ ullokeyyātha.
If you do not look up at the top of my banner,
อะถะ ปะชาปะติสสะ เทวะราชัสสะ ธะชัคคัง อุลโลเกยยาถะ,
Atha pajāpatissa devarājassa dhajaggaṃ ullokeyyātha,
then look up at the top of the banner of Pajāpati, king of the devas;
ปะชาปะติสสะ หิ โว เทวะราชัสสะ ธะชัคคัง อุลโลกะยะตัง ยัมภะวิสสะติ,
Pajāpatissa hi vo devarājassa dhajaggaṃ ullokayataṃ yambhavissati,
for when you look up at the top of the banner of Pajāpati, king of the devas, whatever
ภะยัง วา ฉัมภิตัตตัง วา โลมะหังโส วา,
Bhayaṃ vā chambhitattaṃ vā lomahaṃso vā,
fear or trembling or horripilation there may be,
โส ปะหิยยิสสะติ.
So pahiyyissati.

then look up at the top of the banner of Varuṇa, king of the devas.
วะรุณัสสะ หิ โว เทวะราชัสสะ ธะชัคคัง อุลโลกะยะตัง ยัมภะวิสสะติ,
Varuṇassa hi vo devarājassa dhajaggaṃ ullokayataṃ yambhavissati,
for when you look up at the top of the banner of Varuṇa, king of the devas, whatever
