ภะยัง วา ฉัมภิตัตตัง วา โลมะหังโส วา,

Bhayaṃ vā chambhitattaṃ vā lomahaṃso vā,

whatever fear or trembling or horripilation there may be,

โส ปะหิยยิสสะติ.

So pahiyyissati.

it will be abandoned.

โน เจ วะรุณัสสะ เทวะราชัสสะ ธะชัคคัง อุลโลเกยยาถะ.

No ce varuṇassa devarājassa dhajaggaṃ ullokeyyātha.

If you do not look up at the top of the banner of Varuṇa, king of the devas,

อะถะ อีสานัสสะ เทวะราชัสสะ ธะชัคคัง อุลโลเกยยาถะ,

Atha īsānassa devarājassa dhajaggaṃ ullokeyyātha,

then look up at the top of the banner of Īsāna, king of the devas;

อีสานัสสะ หิ โว เทวะราชัสสะ ธะชัคคัง อุลโลกะยะตัง ยัมภะวิสสะติ,

Īsānassa hi vo devarājassa dhajaggaṃ ullokayataṃ yambhavissati,

for when you look up at the top of the banner of Īsāna, king of the devas, whatever

ภะยัง วา ฉัมภิตัตตัง วา โลมะหังโส วา,

Bhayaṃ vā chambhitattaṃ vā lomahaṃso vā,

whatever fear or trembling or horripilation there may be,

โส ปะหิยยิสสะตีติ.

So pahiyyissatīti.

it will be abandoned.'

ตัง โข ปะนะ ภิกขะเว สักกัสสะ วา เทวานะมินทัสสะ ธะชัคคัง อุลโลกะยะตัง,

Taṃ kho pana bhikkhave sakkassa vā devānamindassa dhajaggaṃ ullokayataṃ,

But, bhikkhus, for one looking up at the top of the banner of Sakka lord of the devas,

ปะชาปะติสสะ วา เทวะราชัสสะ ธะชัคคัง อุลโลกะยะตัง,

Pajāpatissa vā devarājassa dhajaggaṃ ullokayataṃ,

or of the banner of Pajāpati, king of the devas,

วะรุณัสสะ วา เทวะราชัสสะ ธะชัคคัง อุลโลกะยะตัง,

Varuṇassa vā devarājassa dhajaggaṃ ullokayataṃ,

or of the banner of Varuṇa, king of the devas,

อีสานัสสะ วา เทวะราชัสสะ ธะชัคคัง อุลโลกะยะตัง,

Īsānassa vā devarājassa dhajaggaṃ ullokayataṃ,

or of the banner of Īsāna, king of the devas —

ยัมภะวิสสะติ,

Yambhavissati,

whatever there may be,

ภะยัง วา ฉัมภิตัตตัง วา โลมะหังโส วา,

Bhayaṃ vā chambhitattaṃ vā lomahaṃso vā,

whatever fear or trembling or horripilation there may be,

โส ปะหิยเยถาปิ โนปิ ปะหิยเยถะ.

So pahiyyethāpi nopi pahiyyetha.

it might be abandoned, and it might not.

ตัง กิสสะ เหตุ.

Taṃ kissa hetu.

And why is that?

สักโก หิ ภิกขะเว เทวานะมินโท อะวีตะราโค อะวีตะโทโส อะวีตะโมโห,

Sakko hi bhikkhave devānamindo avītarāgo avītadoso avītamoho,

Because Sakka lord of the devas is not free of lust, not free of hate, not free of delusion;

ภิรุ ฉัมภี อุต๎ราสี ปะลายีติ.

Bhiru chambhī utrāsī palāyīti.

he is timid, easily startled, fearful, one who flees.

อะหัญจะ โข ภิกขะเว เอวัง วะทามิ,

Ahañca kho bhikkhave evaṃ vadāmi,

But I, bhikkhus, say this:

สะเจ ตุมหากัง ภิกขะเว อะรัญญะคะตานัง วา รุกขะมูละคะตานัง วา สุญญาคาระคะตานัง วา อุปปัชเชยยะ,

Sace tumhākaṃ bhikkhave araññagatānaṃ vā rukkhamūlagatānaṃ vā suññāgāragatānaṃ vā uppajjeyya,

'If, bhikkhus, when you have gone to the forest, or to the root of a tree, or to an empty dwelling, there should arise

ภะยัง วา ฉัมภิตัตตัง วา โลมะหังโส วา,

Bhayaṃ vā chambhitattaṃ vā lomahaṃso vā,

whatever fear or trembling or horripilation there may be,

มะเมวะ ตัส๎มิง สะมะเย อะนุสสะเรยยาถะ.

Mameva tasmiṃ samaye anussareyyātha.

then at that time recollect me:

อิติปิ โส ภะคะวา อะระหัง สัมมาสัมพุทโธ,

Itipi so bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsambuddho,

Such indeed is the Blessed One: worthy, perfectly awakened by himself,

วิชชาจะระณะสัมปันโน สุคะโต โลกะวิทู อะนุตตะโร ปุริสะทัมมะสาระถิ,

Vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi,

accomplished in knowledge and conduct, well-gone, knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed,

สัตถา เทวะมะนุสสานัง พุทโธ ภะคะวาติ.

Satthā devamanussānaṃ buddho bhagavāti.

teacher of devas and humans, awakened, blessed.

มะมัง หิ โว ภิกขะเว อะนุสสะระตัง ยัมภะวิสสะติ,

Mamaṃ hi vo bhikkhave anussarataṃ yambhavissati,

For when you recollect me, bhikkhus, whatever

ภะยัง วา ฉัมภิตัตตัง วา โลมะหังโส วา,

Bhayaṃ vā chambhitattaṃ vā lomahaṃso vā,

whatever fear or trembling or horripilation there may be,

โส ปะหิยยิสสะติ.

So pahiyyissati.

it will be abandoned.

โน เจ มัง อะนุสสะเรยยาถะ,

No ce maṃ anussareyyātha,

If you do not recollect me,

อะถะ ธัมมัง อะนุสสะเรยยาถะ.

Atha dhammaṃ anussareyyātha.

then recollect the Dhamma:

ส๎วากขาโต ภะคะวะตา ธัมโม,

Svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo,

The Dhamma is well proclaimed by the Blessed One,

สันทิฏฐิโก อะกาลิโก เอหิปัสสิโก โอปะนะยิโก,

Sandiṭṭhiko akāliko ehipassiko opanayiko,

visible here and now, timeless, inviting inspection, leading onward,

ปัจจัตตัง เวทิตัพโพ วิญญูหีติ.

Paccattaṃ veditabbo viññūhīti.

to be known by the wise each for himself.

ธัมมัง หิ โว ภิกขะเว อะนุสสะระตัง ยัมภะวิสสะติ,

Dhammaṃ hi vo bhikkhave anussarataṃ yambhavissati,

For when you recollect the Dhamma, bhikkhus, whatever

ภะยัง วา ฉัมภิตัตตัง วา โลมะหังโส วา,

Bhayaṃ vā chambhitattaṃ vā lomahaṃso vā,

whatever fear or trembling or horripilation there may be,

โส ปะหิยยิสสะติ.

So pahiyyissati.

it will be abandoned.

โน เจ ธัมมัง อะนุสสะเรยยาถะ,

No ce dhammaṃ anussareyyātha,

If you do not recollect the Dhamma,

อะถะ สังฆัง อะนุสสะเรยยาถะ.

Atha saṅghaṃ anussareyyātha.

then recollect the Saṅgha:

สุปะฏิปันโน ภะคะวะโต สาวะกะสังโฆ,

Supaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho,

The Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples has practised well,

อุชุปะฏิปันโน ภะคะวะโต สาวะกะสังโฆ,

Ujupaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho,

the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples has practised uprightly,

ญายะปะฏิปันโน ภะคะวะโต สาวะกะสังโฆ,

Ñāyapaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho,

the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples has practised methodically,

สามีจิปะฏิปันโน ภะคะวะโต สาวะกะสังโฆ,

Sāmīcipaṭipanno bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho,

the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples has practised properly —

ยะทิทัง จัตตาริ ปุริสะยุคานิ อัฏฐะ ปุริสะปุคคะลา,

Yadidaṃ cattāri purisayugāni aṭṭha purisapuggalā,

that is, the four pairs of persons, the eight kinds of individuals;

เอสะ ภะคะวะโต สาวะกะสังโฆ,

Esa bhagavato sāvakasaṅgho,

this Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is

อาหุเนยโย ปาหุเนยโย ทักขิเณยโย อัญชะลีกะระณีโย,

Āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo añjalīkaraṇīyo,

worthy of gifts, worthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of reverential salutation,

อะนุตตะรัง ปุญญักเขตตัง โลกัสสาติ.

Anuttaraṃ puññakkhettaṃ lokassāti.

an unsurpassed field of merit for the world.

สังฆัง หิ โว ภิกขะเว อะนุสสะระตัง ยัมภะวิสสะติ,

Saṅghaṃ hi vo bhikkhave anussarataṃ yambhavissati,

For when you recollect the Saṅgha, bhikkhus, whatever
